Yes they were and its not hard to understand.

Texas was undefeated and had just beat #4 Arkansas 42-7. Nebraska had a tie on their resume, had they not it would have been debatable.

That’s fine. Take 1950 and we should then apply the same logic and take about 5 other seasons - multiple undefeated and 1-loss seasons in the 1950s-1970s.

11 national titles vs 7 works for me!

Yes. This is what I said. Neither of the big polls voted after the bowls.
