First of all, any time I start a thread about Bama, there is never any disrespect or ill will. I have a tremendous admiration and respect for their fans and their overall program.
Regarding 1966 - I know they were #1 for much of the season, then lost it , for some reason, without losing a game. They easily deserved the national title, which would have made them the first 3x defending national champion of the poll era.
Is/Was there a conspiracy to not have them as the national champion because of how they captured the last two titles? AP crowned them as undefeated national champions in 1964 before the bowl loss. 1965 they were on the outside looking in as an 8-1-1 team, but they had no choice but to move to the AP #1 spot as Arkansas, Nebraska, and UPI champion Sparty lost their bowls.
AP and UPI had their own agendas, and they set the rules on how to select their champions. So why punish Alabama in 1966? Hell, chickens**t Ara Parseghian opting to end the game vs. Sparty in a tie should have been more reason why the AP should have given the title to Alabama.
1975 - I know a lot about college football history and how national champions have been selected over the years, but some years I wonder about. I can see Alabama fans wondering why they didn't receive the AP and UPI titles.
Alabama lost at the best time; the first game of the season to an UNRANKED Missouri. Bama wins out.
Oklahoma loses late in the year at home by 20 to an UNRANKED Kansas; but did defeat a RANKED Missouri. Not sure that matters in a head-to-head argument regarding this topic.
In the end, Oklahoma manages to win the AP and UPI titles despite a late season loss to Kansas, whereas Alabama wins 11 straight since their opening season loss to Missouri.
I am all for defending Oklahoma's deserving national title in 1975 en route to a 32-1-1 three season start for Switzer. But I wonder why Alabama wasn't the front runner over Oklahoma after OU's loss to Kansas late?
Also, considering BYU's weak schedule national championship out of the WAC in 1984; I wonder why an undefeated WAC Arizona State wasn't awarded the title in 1975 as they finished #2.
I know it may be a TLDR post, but it's an interesting topic, like many others on this board. Conspiracies? Agendas? Never know what the pollsters had on their minds from 1936-1997.

I can you tell this. I have never heard any old school Bama fan complain about OU getting credit for a title they felt Bama deserved, but I have heard many complain about Notre Dame. That being said, all of this is before my time.(barely). I do remember being a kid and not understanding why we didn't have playoffs.

Oklahoma was the media darling because they were bad boys and previously on probation

I was at that Missouri game. Alabama got the shite beat out of them. Only 20-7, but it was 20-0 before halftime.

'66 was punishment for being too good, being Southern, and mainly for not being integrated

I honestly believe Alabama was the best team in CFB by the end of that season, but they certainly weren't in week 1. There's no way to argue with OU being champion, having the win against a common opponent.
When you throw in ASU, that would have been a great year to watch a 4 team playoff, though.

I don't know which is a more clung-to belief - The Catholic's belief in the infallibility of the Pope or Alabama fan's belief in the infallibility of the AP Poll.
My personal opinion is that Alabama was NOT deserving in 64 but CERTAINLY deserved the title in 66.

ap probably just had several beefs with bama, from the integration thing to the fact that they'd awarded the '64 before the bowl game and bama lost, only to change the rules and have bama win sort of by default in '65 ... probably just said in '66 'this ain't happening' ... ou beat 18th, 2nd and 5th ranked teams to close out the year, so that probably helped quite a bit ... didn't realize asu was 2nd that year and beat a very decent nebraska team in their bowl game to finish undefeated ...

As the poster above says, read maisels book and there is quite a few "reasons" why bama got screwed in both those years. Everybody bitches about 73 and the upi championship bama won without winning its bowl. How bout 66 when notre dame TIED their final game and then didn't even go to a bowl?
There was a lot of political backdooring in those days. Yes, 75 should have been ours too. We lost to Mizzou but when ou lost to Kansas, they basically weren't penalized. There was way way way more to the polls back then than just your strength of schedule, common opponents, etc. There were way too many personal agendas that created a damn near government inquiry into it. Now a days, these teams would play each other in bowls. Back then no. Penn state, people forget 1969 and the screw job they got. No way notre dame was gonna let another eastern independent win or even play for a title. Nixon even went to the Texas game to make sure there was no misunderstanding. That event was as bad as our 66,75 and 77 screw job.

It was because of Jim Crowe

The Missing Ring is a great book about the '66 college football season. It has pretty much been stated by many that Bama (the south) was punished because of Jim Crow.

Bama fans’ belief in the infallibility of the AP poll? What the frick are you talking about? If anything, we tend to the opposite extreme. I wasn’t even alive in ‘66 or ‘77 and I carry a chip on my shoulder about those final polls, as do most Bama fans. The AP poll has been very fallible through the years.
...except for any year in which we were voted number one. In those years the AP poll was a bastion of integrity and right thinking.

What I have a hard time grasping is how they could be too good and not be integrated. Bear must have had every white guy that runs fast in the South on that team for them to have enough team speed.
