The first year that helmets became mandatory in college football. Also the year the Riddell introduced the first non leather or moleskin football helmet. That helmet would not be worn in a game until the 1940 Syracuse-Northwestern game.

Riddell's helmet was later selected to be used for US Army airborne training at Fort Benning, GA. Riddell did not have dark green paint, so the helmets provided were either unpainted or in West Point's colors. Some helmets were later repainted green at Ft. Benning.

American paratrooper training in a painted helmet.

The "stripe" down the middle of the helmet is actually a metal bar.

High def pics here

Canadian paratrooper in unpainted helmet. Canada adopted the same helmet when it established its airborne school at Shilo, Manitoba in 1943.

Great job baw

I am a fan of ancient history, and you really put together an informative bit about a time long, long ago.

Well done.

Coincidence?

I'm sure there's a book covered in dust in a library somewhere that could confirm this.

You could almost say football in 1939 wasn’t even the same thing and any seasons of significance really don’t matter

So I went back and for some reason a lot of what I typed didn't post, but I can see it in the message when I go back and click edit.

The helmets were also used by the famous 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, an all black airborne unit. The unit deployed to the west coast and were part of the smoke jumping pioneers to contain fires caused by Japanese fire balloons. In 1945, the 555th PIB worked 28 fires and jumped into 15 of these. These helmets were further modified with a fencing mask to protect the jumpers' faces from branches and debris when jumping into fight the fires.

After the war, the 555th PIB was disbanded and its paratroopers went into various units in the 82d Airborne Division, making the 82d Airborne the first integrated division in the US Army.

On a side note, this is the first color picture I have ever seen of the 555th.

Making people think the thread is about A&M is the best way to get LSU posters to open it.
