In 2018 #16 UMBC upset #1Virginia by a score of 74-54.
UMBC is the University of Maryland Baltimore County .

I mean, what’s “any”? If you mean literally .001%, then probably 70. If you mean .1%, probably 25. 1% is probably 10.

No way for OU.

Notre Dame has a tough schedule but they have an upgrade at HC so they could contend.

Definitely-
Alabama, tOSU

Possibly-
UGA, TexAm, ND

Maybe-
Clemson, Texas, USC, UF, LSU, Arkansas, PSU, Oregon, Michigan, Miami, Utah, Oklahoma

Darkhorse-
Auburn, Mich St, Ole Miss, FSU, Nebraska

* Texas, USC, Oregon all depends on how the new coaches work out and get things going

** Nebraska lost 8 BIG10 games by 49 points combined. Their 1 win was by 49. They lost 7 of those by 1 score or less. I think Frost is close.

*** Auburn, I like Harsin. I think FSU is almost ready to start back. I think Clemson has peaked and will be top 20 good, but the top 5 days have passed.

So to answer the question.. 5!

Like it or not college football is in desperate need of reform. The only way we get back to some semblance of balance is reintroducing academics back into the game and removing paying the players. Until those things occur it's going to be a shite show.

There are 5 schools that have recruited a top 5 class in the last 3 recruiting cycles. They are Alabama, UGA, Clemson, LSU, and Ohio State. Since 2014 all of these schools have won a Natty and nobody else has. The only thing that will change is maybe Texas A&M will get in the mix as they are able to match the talent of those schools and get into the top 5 in recruiting with the big time money they have. The boosters of Alabama, UGA, Clemson, Ohio State, and LSU have monopolized recruiting. It make sense tho, if you pay for recruits and make it to the CFP with all the media money, you get a return on your investment, hence, how the monopoly started. It’s a win win for all parties. The only thing that stopped one of those schools from getting the number 1 class this year is the insane money from the Aggie boosters who are hoping to get a return themselves.

Recruiting 4 star and especially 5 star players matter. We can sit around the camp fire and sing cumbia, pretend that everyone is equally talented, but that’s not how the world works. We need some kind of a “salary cap” or some way to regulate recruiting or we will get more of the same. The more Natty’s these select 5 schools win, the wider the gap will become . We live in an age now with twitter, and multiple
recruiting services to tell you exactly who the best players are and where to find them. A coach to get in contact with a player is a DM away.

UMD knocked off UVA 3 years ago, maybe 4.. I think 2 years before c19.

But it’s not the same as a 16 beating a 1; it’s more like a 4 beating a 1…. There 4 #1 seeds and so on.. when a 16 knocks of a 1 in basketball it’s really a #64 beating a #1.

#4 seeds which is what we are talking about in a 16 team playoff.. the number 16 team in the land; has won the NCAA 1 time…. If we only do 12 teams; then that’s like a 3 seed.. they have won it 4 times.

A number one seed in basketball has won the title more than double any other seed combined.
However, it the 8 years so far the #4 seed has won it as many times as the 1. 2 times.

The argument for the playoff is for the team that gets hot late, but can’t overcome an early season loss.. and they maybe the best team at the end of the year. Utah and OSU both this year would have made a lot of noise in an expanded playoff; Okie state as well.

The limited access is killing the spurt nationally.. in the South and Mid west it’s fine….. but do you really want to look around in 20 years and be like where did everyone go?

It would be great if the top 20-30 would separate from the rest in their own league. For me I'll just watch the 100 other schools left over in a real playoff that's far more interesting.

If I want to watch real pro football I'll wait until Sunday

I believe Clay Travis does a story on this every single year. Going back to the mid-90s, when recruiting services began to pop up in the United States, you need one or two Top 10 recruiting classes on your roster to have any kind of chance. 2000 Oklahoma is the only exception to that rule.

And both of them got blown away in the semi-finals by teams that run circles around them on the recruiting trail.
