It’s a hedge. If you buy 3k or more in mattress and Bama wins it’s free. He does these throughout the year on sports and other things.

That's bad luck for Bama...

It’s only a hedge if UGA wins, right?

Not sure if it’s bad luck or not, but his betting history has been… odd. To say the least.

If UGA wins people have to pay for their purchases.
If Bama wins people’s furniture is free.

Interesting way to advertise.

I am a bit confused. If Georgia wins, he loses 1.2 million correct?
Does he expect to lose 1m or more in mattress sales if Alabama wins?
Or is it more about publicity?

Publicity, i'm sure Caesar's is it on it as well. They'll have to cover the other side.

Mattress Mack came to one of my business courses once for a guest lecture.
He told a story about one of his customers from years ago. (Back when TVs were in huge boxes and not just the initial package like the TV is in a actual box for young people. Not a flat screen)
A customer was going to have a Super Bowl party and ordered this massive TV (70 inches or something so in a box you can imagine) among other things.
Mattress Mack’s store gave free same day delivery. When they get the TV there, the guy wants it upstairs in his game room but it doesn’t fit up the stairs. Owner doesn’t care and says tear a hole in my house if you need to. Mack sends a whole crew out there to get the TV hoisted and through a hole in the house (paraphrasing a bit as it’s been a few years)
The deal ends up costing Mack money due to the delivery. But the customer was apparently ecstatic and he earned a customer for life.

Ultimately it's advertising to sell a bunch of mattresses.
If he wins the bet he basically passes some of it on to the people in the form of free mattresses. If he loses the bet he hopes that the publicity and enticement for people to buy mattresses in the hope they would be free (and are now NOT free) will offset his loss.
Probably hoping for about a zero sum gain on this particular bet/mattress giveaway, but hopes to profit from the residual publicity and name recognition this generates regardless of the outcome of the bet.

Has he ever won one of these big bets? Looks like he’s lost some big ones on the Astros and lost on the Houston Cougars in the ball tourney last year.

He’s won on the Astros plenty of times too.
He’s in a no lose situation.

I love Mattress Mack.
He started out selling mattresses out of a roadside tent. Now he has this:

That's a shame.
In all seriousness, with him being based in Houston, it would have been bad optics to bet against the Astros or Cougar High in those situations.
