Are we gonna sign any elite, in-state front seven players in 2020 and 2021?

On the D-Line, we already have 4* DTJosiah Hayes who’s a Top 250 prospect from Horn Lake. We’re probably the leader for 4* DT McKinnley Jackson (it’s close though) and he’s a Top 200 prospect from Lucedale. We’re also probably the leader (again not by much) for 4* DE Omari Thomas from Memphis if you wanna count that as in-state who’s a Top 100 prospect.

At linebacker, it’s not a particularly strong in-state class. Ole Miss has ILB Austin Keys from Seminary. ESPN has him inside their Top 300 but 247 has him as a mid 3* and Rivals have him as low 3*. That could change because I think he was injured for a lot of last year. He’s also put on some weight. If he has a big season, I think he could become a Top 250ish player across the board.

So I guess it depends on your definition of elite but those are the in-state guys we either have or have the best chance with.

How is Luke getting beat by an out of state yankee that has to lure recruits to Starkville?

We have the #2 and #7 players in the state committed and probably lead for #1 & #4. I wouldn't say he's getting beat out lol only six of the top 10 have even committed

State has 12 in-state commitments (like 18-19 if you count JUCOs). I think there’s only 5 that we would take- Lideatrick Griffin and Dillon Johnson who both grew up big state fans, Janari Dean, and Emmanuel Forbes and Jakivaun Brown who both are at least 50-50 to flip to Ole Miss. If we flip those last two, that means State got 3 in-state kids we want. I don’t think that’s getting beat out lol.

Their class is rated higher and they have more MS kids. Most of our 8 are down the list. They have a lot of 4 star MS kids. Doesn't look close to me and we are almost full.

By one spot. They also have one more commit than us and are LOADED on JUCOs. We have 7 kids that are in the Top 400 high school prospects (I think one is actually like 406 but you get my point). They have 3 top 400 prospects. Our 9th highest high school kid (#535 overall) would be the 4th highest rated high school kid in their class. Their 4th highest is #551 overall. We’re also in good position to flip two of their in-state kids.

They have more MS kids.

There’s several we wouldn’t take. Example: they have Will Rogers, mid 3 star QB from MS. We went and got a 4* QB from Alabama in Robby Ashford. Which would you rather have? You’d be complaining if it were the other way around. Another example, they have the #14 player in state, Jevorrius Selmon, who I think projects to be a DB (I might be wrong but I think he’s their highest rated DB; if not it’s like the #17 player in state). Instead, we have a 4* DB from Louisiana in Eric Reed. Again, who would you rather have?

They have two four stars from MS lol unless you wanna count JUCOs. Then it’s 3 cause one of the JUCOs is originally from Tennessee. Two are barely even a 4* (Heath and Johnson). They have 4 top 15 players from Mississippi. We have 3. Most of their MS kids are between 16-30. That’s where most of ours are. We only have 1 kid outside the Top30. We’re also in great position to land the #1 & #4 players.

I think we’re doing just fine in-state.

we really need Jackson and Thomas to go with Hayes. Those are big DTs that will play a lot as freshman.

That’s a HUGE flip. This kid is way underrated. He should and very well could be a 4 star after his senior year.

I agree. I think we hold the edge for both right now but we’ll see.

With us being in on so many key targets and only a couple of spots left, I wonder if we will part ways with some current commits.

We will. I think the likeliest to go is Daylen Gill, who’s a JUCO guy projected to play linebacker for us.

Jak Brown

Offer Sheet; Ole Miss, MS State, Auburn, Baylor, Indiana, Kentucky, LSU, Memphis, Oregon, Southern Miss. Interest has also been drawn from Alabama, Tennessee, and Troy (but no offers from those 3 schools).

Jakivuan Brown, the newest commitment for the Rebels and a flip from Mississippi State, is a 3* TE/OLB from Horn Lake, MS. He's the 23rd ranked player in the state of MS, standing 6'3" and weighing in at 225 lbs. He is an incredible run blocker on offense, and a hard hitting linebacker on defense with good chase-down speed. He seems to be comfortable on both sides of the ball, and if he has a good senior season, he'll be one of the most coveted prospects in the state of MS. He's a lot like Jeremiah Pegues out of Oxford in that they play on both sides of the ball and are fast/physical.

Any idea if Montra Edwards is a take or a back-up plan if they miss on Jackson or Thomas? There were some Crystal Balls to the Rebs on 247 yesterday. I like his film but it seems State and Oregon have backed off his recruitment.

I think Montra Edwards is probably more of a back-up right now. That could change though because the staff likes him. I think the D-Line board is set like this right now:

1a McKinnley Jackson
1b Omari Thomas
3 Jah-Marien Latham
4 Montra Edwards

I think they only want 2 but if Jackson, Thomas, and Latham all wanted in, I don’t know how they say no considering they haven’t gotten a 4* D-lineman (excluding Josiah Hayes in this class) since 2016. Other than that scenario, I think they’d only take Montra if they missed on two of Jackson, Thomas, or Latham.
