Correct. My bad. Though he was born in Winter Haven, FL, He was raised in Waycross. I knew that.
Here's one of his better tunes, an old Hank Snow cover where he references Waycross:

Freshman in Athens in 86 so naturally I'm a SPREADNECK! Gearing up for four shows at Red Rocks here soon. Saw R.E.M. a few times at the 40Watt, which was pretty fricking cool. Last summer, the B-52's headlined one night of Telluride Blues and Brews so those old frickers are still going strong. Pretty sure that no other SEC town can touch Athens when it comes to music.

Athens/Columbia connections:
The Whigs
Toro Y Moi
Washed Out
Band of Horses
Never understood the Widespread fixation. Not a jam band guy but they and Phish came to CHS in 2010. Some friends convinced me to go to both and I wasn't blown away by either but Phish was clearly the superior product, and it wasn't even remotely close. Widespread struck me as a bar style cover band that hit the lotto.

I hate you.
I'm doing a nice week run. 2 shows in Vegas, show in Dallas, 2 shows at Oak Mountain.
I WILL NOT miss next year's RR shows, dammit.
