This is a part of it, but we need to bring back shame so the importance of manners returns as well. Jesus said we only needed two commandments but folks stopped trying on the 2nd one.

When "I" returns to "we" hen community returns.

I find this is more of an over 40 quality, especially the Boomers. It's getting worse as they get older and their brains continue to deteriorate so they show more of their true selves, but they're also beginning to die off so it'll equal out eventually

Lack of community. When you live in a metro area, the chance that you see someone you know in an establishment is very small, giving people the sense that they can do and say whatever without fear that their momma will hear about it.

I think a lot of it is a lack of repercussions for being an a-hole anymore. In days gone by if you acted like that, it's highly possible someone would check you on it (either physically or verbally). If you were a little mouthy turd in elementary school a teacher could paddle you. And if you did it on the playground a fellow student would whip your arse. In either instance it was known you started it and deserved the retribution.

Now there are protections in place for those who act that way that would punish someone for checking you on it and thus that behavior become accepted. If I had been a mouthy little shite and gotten my arse whipped as a kid my parents would have simply said "I bet you don't do that again".

I think there is a reason.

If it makes you feel better, pretty sure I have never down voted you.

I blame it on the leader of the free world for it escalating. He doesn't seem to GAF about anyone. Thus America decides it is okay to do the same. Courtesy used to be a thing even with people you disagreed with. It died a long time ago way before this President.

I think people are becoming bigger a-holes because of social media and things like it. When you diminish the importance of face to face interaction people gradually stop giving a shite how they act around others. Just my opinion.

Well said.

True, but the way we engage in identity politics in this age is napalm on the fire.

If you say something I disagree with, it's a debate.

If you say something I disagree with, and it's a thing that I've wrapped up in my own identity, you're evil, and I can speak to you in whatever vile manner I choose. I can assault you, and it's righteous.

This will end in blood.

The "e-culture" is quickly destroying our ability to communicate on a personal level. How we socialize with each other is learned through daily face-to-face interaction with others. Take that away and replace it with instruments that entice electronic communication, and you'll soon have a society of folks who are uncomfortable and awkward if they have to physically interact with other people they aren't familiar with. When that's the case, people tend to be short and appear uninterested in the persons they're talking to....it's a psychological defense mechanism.

I don't, but old people do. Their anger is trickling down so much so that they have started sending chain emails pissing off their younger family members that thought it was something important.

Society has been in a decline since we gave women the vote.

Can we have it back?

TIA.

I think assholery is directly linked to population size. There have been allusions to this in preceding posts.

Humans are social animals and our tribal instincts are still strong. We want to know and socialize with all the members of our “tribe.”

This is possible in small groups such as villages and towns. We feel friendly towards them.

In large cities where it isn’t possible to know everyone we still have our circles of friends, or tribes. We constantly encounter members of other tribes, briefly, and we don’t extend our tribe’s pleasantries to them because we’ll probably never see them again.

Since pleasant social interactions strengthen and maintain bonds within our tribes, we don’t intuitively see a necessity of offering those pleasantries to strangers. It’s a wasted effort for lots of people.

My thoughts are similar to Kentucker's here. Except, I have always thought it was tied closely to scarcity of resources. Which, I guess sorta goes hand in hand with population size. In some parts of the world if you steal bread from someone, they can legally cut off your hand. Here in the US we have such excess that apparently you can go steal from Walmart and so long as your stolen items don't amount to more than a certain dollar amount they won't do a damn thing about it.

So when we get in the bigger cities everyone is stuck in the rat race. Hustlin to get ahead. More competition for jobs, which means more people willing to stab you in the back if necessary to advance their position. More assholes. In the smaller towns people are more friendly it seems because 1) everyone knows everyone else and 2) you don't see issues like mass homelessness, which means more people's needs are being met. Therefore, not as much reason to act like a douche.
