The obelisk is from Egypt, was there for saint peters(important guy

Caligula brought it from Egypt back to Rome in AD 37. The Vatican Hill used to be a site of several circuses and it was part of one such complex until being moved in the 16th century to its present location. As NYCAuburn said, The Vatican is believed to be the site of Peter's martyrdom
Which is pretty cool, if you've ever been there. The obelisk itself was built in 1835 BC.
