People just seem a lot less uptight and more laid back here than in Bham too.

This. While I grew up in Birmingham (and it is possible I am just tired of it), I prefer Mobile. I spent 4 years going there People are much more laid back. The coast is right there, along with NOLA, Biloxi, and overall it has gotten better for young people. Plenty of decent restaurants and some good bars. Mardi Gras fills that void of downtime between the holidays and springtime just right. Still has a smaller city feel but it has plenty of everything you would want.

so I'm guessing you didn't try out Callahan's or the Bike Shop.

those bars aren't exactly filled with "rift rafts"

I don't live there yet. Just getting a feel for it. I'm either going to grad school or getting a job in Mobile soon.

Mobile seems great for me. Close to the beaches and 2 hour from new Orleans.

I am from New Orleans but my son goes to school at Springhill College in Mobile, so we visit three or four times a year just for a change of pace. It is a very nice city and one of the very few in all of Alabama that does not absolutley reek of redneck. Sure, there are some, but overall the city has a distinct vibe and a little bit of actual culture that distinguishes it from the hick hells that are Birmingham and Montgomery.

No doubt it has a more coastal / creole feel to it. It is more in line with south Louisiana than Alabama.

Of course it is. The history of Mobile is much more intertwined with New Orleans/Coast than the rest of Alabama.

oh okay, my bad

you might want to try out Fuego, Butch Cassidy's, and the Dew Drop Inn (all located off of Old Shell Road). They are all nice little places to grab some good grub. The burgers at Butch Cassidy's are outstanding.

I go down there and watch some college games there sometimes during football season. And I like to watch the Monday Night games there if the Saints are playing.

edit: I know you're looking for bars to hang out at but I'd figured I'd let you know about some places to eat too.

Very familiar with this place. My uncle owns a duplex near Dauphin & Houston.
