I have an older cousin who is HIV positive. He was in a bad motorcycle accident in Dallas back in the late 70s or early 80s, before they tested blood for HIV. He had a transfusion during surgery, which saved his life. And found out a few years later when he had a physical for life insurance that he was positive. He was only told when he questioned why he was rejected for the insurance.
He got into treatment immediately, and has done some cutting edge stuff. It's never developed into full-blown AIDS. And what's really amazing is that his wife never got it, and he had to have been positive for a few years before they found out.
Anyway, he's lived knowing his status for 30 years or so now. It wasn't the death sentence they were afraid of at first. Of course, he was healthy with no high-risk behaviors too - no drug use, only one hetero sex partner, exercised.

A guy I went to school with, his grandfather was a security guard at the local hospital. HIV patient comes in and needs to be restrained. He ends up biting the security guard, the bite was deep enough to transfer the disease.
The grandfather is a great guy and still lives a normally functioning life.

A guy who was a couple of grades ahead of me in school died from AIDS several years ago. He was the son of my childhood doctor, and was gay. He didn't let his family know he had it, and they didn't find out until he was really sick, so the treatments weren't very effective. It was pretty sad since his dad could've helped him, but it's a small town, and he didn't want his family to be the talk of it. This was at a time when there was still a rather big stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, especially in a small, rural area.

Never known an actual person with HIV, but one of my favorite characters on Queer as Folk had it.

Professionally, it's not uncommon for me to come across people with HIV/AIDS. Personally, I've only known of one person. It was a girl in college whose dad was a very prominent doctor. She was a senior my freshman year, and she found out that her dad was HIV positive and that he was secretly gay.
I don't know what happened to him because we weren't good friends, but I remember seeing her crying in her car and being told later that she'd just found out her dad was infected and she didn't want to go home for spring break.

Had an uncle who contracted HIV around 1986. He went to Mexico to purchase antivirals that were not approved in the US. He died of cancer in 2008. Don't know any real statistics, but I'd imagine there were less than 1% that made it to the mid-90's from the mid-80's. Hell, finding out you have hepatitis c is worse than HIV nowadays.

Well, AIDS isn't fatal
Actually AIDS is still almost 100% fatal. HIV, the disease before it destroys all your T cells, is the part that is manageable. If you can keep from converting from HIV to AIDS then you have a shot. If you convert to AIDS then you will either die from pneumonia, skin cancers or cerebral hemorrhage.

The virus mutates rapidly, which is part of the reason why they're having such a hard time developing a vaccine. Based on what he told me, some of the early, 80s strains (which is what he had*) are easier to treat and control because they were a less advanced form of the virus and they respond to the antivirals more so than the later stains.
It's possible to be infected with different strains of HIV at the same time, too. LINK
*They called his HIV strain "Fleet Week 1986," or something like that because of all the sailors who were in NYC for fleet week then and later came down with the same disease. He was a reactor tech on submarines...

This says those docs were wrong. LINK
There is no doubt the virus is evolving (as every organism), but an HIV diagnosis in the 1980's was a virtual death sentence.
Plus, my uncle had a severe case of thrush and Kaposi sarcomas popping up.....so I'm pretty sure he would have been dead within a matter of months if he hadn't taken those illegal antivirals.

One of my ex's friends has it. Hung out with him a few times and is a cool dude and you would never guess. But apparently he is on some hardcore meds and when he gets of them for a few days he starts to look like shite. Attractive guy too.
