This is how I think.

I wouldn't say it is naive. There is a logical argument for both cases, it also depends on what you define as "intelligent life".

Think of the astronomical odds that we humans exist even given the fact that the earth is in the habitable zone and all that jazz. I'm not saying I don't agree with you because I do, I just don't think it is a guarantee. If we could go back and watch the history of our planet I bet we would be chilled to the bone when we saw just how close we came to never existing. you need all of the developmental time and evolutionary time to get to the "intelligent life" stage, avoiding asteroids, supernova, solar flares, and thousands of other dangers of space to get to the point we are at today.

And as arrogant as it sounds and as unbelievable when you look at all the idiots that are running around these days at this moment in time, we could be the highest form of civilization in the universe.

I studied a lot of physics and mathematics in my day and the one thing i figured out for certain is the we know very very little, and even that we are only about 90% sure that what we think is right.
