The trucking industry will fight that tooth and nail. And yes, it will cause a paradigm shift, which might not be all bad. Many of our highways were built originally when a lot of things were still transported by train.

And I think people would be willing to pay tolls, as long as they're reasonable. The toll, or user fee, they were floating would have made it $80 round trip from St. Louis to KC. That's ridiculous, and people would look for alternatives - different routes, Amtrak, etc.

That's a really bad idea IMHO. Students will start using 50/63 to avoid the toll and then wrecks will increase on the twisty two lanes. If they do put a toll on 70 I expect to see an increase in accidents involving college age kids.

I'm a professor. I research. I write. I teach. My students (undergrads & grads) have my cell number. I tell them on the first day of class that, unless I'm a patient in surgery or sitting in church or a funeral, they'll always receive a response within a couple of hours--max--from me. I also ask them not to call me to bail them out of jail.

You're a bigger man then me. I couldn't stand the little bit I experienced.

Hell yeah, Porker.
Education is a team sport, and my students are the starting lineup.
Don't get me wrong ... tenure & promotion is damn important; but facilitating the acquisition of knowledge is invaluable.
Tell that "50% of your professors" that they're disappointing you. Seriously.
Cite specific examples, and share 'em with your profs. Then share 'em with your department head.
Ain't nobody got time for dat.

Department head is part of the problem. Trust me, all those things will be addressed in the exit interview though

It obviously warranted 7 pages of discussion, how stupid of a topic could it be?

Hmm. Can't say I'm surprised.
If you're so inclined, take the next step & share 'em with the dean.
Good luck to you.

Thanks. Overall it is a great experience and I love the department, I just think a few need to refocus their priorities. I'm at the point where I get to take all electives so I just choose wisely

My problems are insignificant compared to those of many, but this is a message board and I get to say what I think

Yes, they will. If the toll is too high. The issue is truck traffic. Trucks do far more damage to the highways than peoples' personal vehicles. Yet they don't pay a proportionate share of maintenance, which is an issue.

I-70 is in terrible shape, and getting continually worse. It needs to be at least a 6 lane highway across the state, maybe wider in some places. I absolutely hate getting on that highway.

Rule of thumb is 1 truck = 500 cars

Your problems aren't insignificant; and as you well know, they're extremely typical.
You could've been describing most of my tenture-track colleagues.

I'm with you, I hate it and do my best to avoid it but when your running back and forth from STL to KC you don't have much choice.

6 or 8 lanes would be awesome and while we are at it I think they should put elevated high speed rail right down the middle with subway like terminals in KC, COMO, STL on up to Chicago to start.

Then that will get congested, forcing people to use I-70 (or other forms of transit...a scary thought for many Americans)

i LOVE the idea of high=speed rail. That would be awesome, and I think people would use it. And if they do widen the highway, there should be a designated truck lane.

We are REALLY dependent on our cars. More so than any other country in the world that I know of.

In Europe, subways and trains are a great way to travel. We're don't have this infrastructure any longer here, but it wouldn't be a bad thing.

It is frustrating with how much I am paying (which is almost nothing compared to folks at elite uppity northeast schools...don't know how they do it).

I'm not receiving services I'm paying for. If educators get to treat it like a business, so should I.

Well it seems like you are one of the good guys at least

I can serve as your monthly reminder that students appreciate hard working professors, not just the other way around

And you're still coming out ahead. If you're getting a post-graduate degree in civil engineering from TAMU, you're already set; you've certainly got a far better value than what any school's offering back east.
