That is an awesome view

Eureka is pretty neat. Driving over there from Fayetteville is an experience on its own

Lost Valley/Eden Falls area is my favorite of the Buffalo sites I have been to

hopefully I will see the rest this summer (when not working )

He lost his mojo on this one. This was not a good outing for Porker Face.

EDIT: We went to Eden Falls for the first time last trip. It was right after a flood wiped out the bridge at the start. Water was up, little water falls everywhere...it was amazing.

FINALLY an answer!!

I know MoDot cut their budget in half a few years back. They had the balls to do what AHTD and many surrounding DOTs don't

I like you, 870. I really do. But you also have a tendency to troll. And that's what we're not allowing on the Mizzou board. I think we've allowed 3 Arkansas posters, and none of them troll.

Whatever, you went from calling me puke to showing me pretty pictures of Arkansas and telling me my view is nice. That doesn't exactly fit the big bad trolling Porker Face we know and love.

You're edge is gone, we may as well admit you to the Mizzou site.

Hey, I have on occasion been un-mean to Missouri posters in the past, you are not the first!

That may be my perception but it is not my intent for that to be my image

ETA: I don't troll. That isn't allowed on this site. If I trolled, I would be banned, something that has never happened

I knew it!

You may regret that decision later down the line...

I consider it a good outing. All I was looking for was an answer about UM/MU closing tomorrow.

I got that (in time), that was my only goal!

They didn't have much choice!

Seriously, MoDot is a strange organization. No one really has oversight over them, and they wasted a lot of money over the years. The budget cuts forced the closing of some rest areas, and put some projects on hold. Basically, they're keeping up with repairs and maintaining public areas, and that's about it.

If we get the I-70 improvements we want/need, it'll likely have to be voted on by the taxpayers, and an outside firm hired. MoDot tried an end-around on that, and got shut down.

Bottom line, they can handle maintenance. But when there's an unexpected event, like a blizzard, they're lost.

To be honest, if the PPP MoDot wants on I-70 comes to fruition and becomes how our infrastructure is funded in the next 50-100 years, we are in for a paradigm shift. It will change travel and transportation forever

Ultimately it makes sense: people who use the roads pay for it. Usually that is called a "toll" but maybe calling it a "user fee" will work

I don't think research is useless. I think it should be second behind competent undergrad education.

But to say that undergrad education doesn't suffer at the expense of research didn't go into a technical field. Overworked professors choose research over students every time, that is how students suffer

I think we have a private sector that can research but can't teach

I guess this is where we will have to just disagree then.

Students suffer because of their own lack of preparedness (most of the time).

As a grad student I had to TA (which meant actually doing most of the work) two lecture class and then a lab every other semester as part of the program. The only students that had problems were the one not wanting to put in the required work. It wasn't because of any research the professor had going on.

Thinking back to undergrad, I really didn't need my professors most of the time because I took care of my own learning. I went to class to reinforce what I had previously studied, not the other way around.

Yep, half my professors are available any time I want to talk with them. The other half won't get around to responding to an email for three weeks

You can guess which are big into research and which teach better classes

ETA: I'm not worried about my personal effort level

I'm a professor.
I research.
I write.
I teach.
My students (undergrads & grads) have my cell number.
I tell them on the first day of class that, unless I'm a patient in surgery or sitting in church or a funeral, they'll always receive a response within a couple of hours--max--from me.
I also ask them not to call me to bail them out of jail.

The trucking industry will fight that tooth and nail. And yes, it will cause a paradigm shift, which might not be all bad. Many of our highways were built originally when a lot of things were still transported by train.

And I think people would be willing to pay tolls, as long as they're reasonable. The toll, or user fee, they were floating would have made it $80 round trip from St. Louis to KC. That's ridiculous, and people would look for alternatives - different routes, Amtrak, etc.

So sad to see Arkansas strain--cry, even--for someone to care enough.

We care, Arkansas. We do. You can stop trying to force a rivalry down Mizzou's throat.

We all think you're worthy. That you bring valuable substance to the conference. No need to flail your arms and make loud, inaudible noises.

We see you. And we do care.

If only there were more people like you who thought that way

Our gas tax (primary resource for highway funding) hasn't been raised since the 1970s. Guess what: we have more fuel efficient vehicles going further on less gas and tearing up more miles while bringing in less money. Add in population growth and you've got a civil engineering quandary
