You're a gun owner now, start calling it a magazine

decided it was time to arm myself and my wife, especially because she works from home a lot. feels good to have some extra peace of mind.

Put in a lot of practice with the gun. Make sure the wife is on board, and consider an introductory weapon class for her. She'll learn plenty about the weapon, and what to do when in case it is needed.

My wife took one, and she learned a few things about defense with a weapon in the house that I had never thought of.

Best gun for home defense is a 20 gauge pump action shotgun.

Period.

Yep. Nothing beats Winchester White Box for shitty range ammo.

Matter of fact, that's what I've got sitting in mine now. Wasted all the good stuff getting the missus ready for high grain ammo.

hardest part is loading the effing bullets into the clip, pain in the arse but I guess I'll get used to it. what about ammo? I've heard it's hard to find 9mm these days. I got a box of 20 hollow points for $30, is that about going rate? Plan on having a clip of these for the house, buying range bullets for when we go shoot.

You are lucky you didn't post this on the ob.

It's a magazine, not a clip. It will get easier once you put some ammo through it. 9mm Target ammo can be had easily for .40 cents or less. But should be less than .30. Check gunbot.net regularly. Ammo is scarce right now. Stock up, you should be going to the range on the regular to get familiar.

With a 20 gauge, the ammo is super cheap, you don't need to be accurate, and it's a man stopper.

Just point and pull the trigger.

Plus, the sound of the pump is enough to stop most intruders.

got it, magazine. I'm a novice, not ashamed to admit it. Shot about 100 rounds of this bad boy before we bought it so at least I know how to operate the thing if needed.

Kind of a myth. Spread is not that wide inside a home unless you are shooting down a long hallway.

Easier to aim a shotgun. Long barrel compared to a pistol.

Keep one in the chamber.

Do you know how to operate it under duress? Have you taken a gun safety course? Anyone who buys a handgun for the first time should take the course.

Handguns are the most dangerous of all guns.

Learn to field strip and clean that bad boy. Get all your range equipment. Plugs, glasses, Range bag for ammo and mags.
Buy extra magazines. Lots of them. If you plan on keeping that gun, it's nice when you can have them preloaded.

I have an 18" youth model 20 gauge with adjustable choke, which takes care of the spray.

It's small enough to easily move thru the house, gun at hip pointed forward.

If I change the choke and attach an extender pad it's a very nice trap shooting gun.

Perfect gun. I'd have nothing else for home defense.

I do agree a 20 gauge shotgun is perfect for home defense.

18 inch barrel with a stubby/folding stock. #4 buckshot

I am not denying that a shotgun is a good hd gun. I have an 870 12 gauge built for it. Just saying in a home the spread is going to be maybe 4-8 inches maybe less depending on how close. The benefit of the shogun combined with buckshot, is the stoping power. It's like getting hit with 6-8 9mm at once. How many times do you hear about a guy getting shot by a hand gun and still doing something like running away. Not so much with the shotgun. It's got the stoping power.

Different situations call for different protection though.

People at trap ranges sometimes laugh at how small my 18" barrel 20 gauge appears, but when they see how well I shoot on the trap range their smiles disappear.

I calmly explain that the gun is first and foremost for home defense - which is why I purchased a small barrel. However, it doesn't affect my shooting ability on the range.

Hence - perfect gun.

They are legal..

Loophole in the system, as they are considered a handgun due to never having a stock built on the gun at the factory.

I don't think you can have a "handgun" with a forward grip
