I'm continually surprised by how many ppl don't know the weather forecast for any given day.

Like today a an older guy I work with looked out the window and was like "its gonna rain" and bc I know what the forecast was I said "no it's just supposed to be gloomy, it may rain tomorrow though" and he said "can you see out that window?" like I was an idiot and sure enough it hasn't rained and is now sunny outside

This happens all the time where ppl legit have no idea what the weather is supposed to be and I almost always know the forecast. Is this the farmer coming out in me of paying attention to the weather and most ppl just don't have a clue?

I only pay attention when I have to work outside. But I know plenty of people who keep up with it. I also keep up with it when its getting close to the first freeze. Then I have to harvest the last of the tomatoes, peppers, etc.

I read the every forecast discussion from my local NWS. Even look at computer models from time to time. We're not alone. There are dozens of us.

I keep up with it somewhat. Not everyday, but I keep up with it enough to not be caught by rain or a cold front or storms. Summer forecasts in Alabama are pretty much the same everyday - hot, humid, with 50% chance of afternoon storms. So I don't pay as close attention during the summer.

We've been in monsoon season for the past few months, no need to look at the weather.

Similarly, the temperature is usually the same almost all year round.

I tend to follow the weather closely. I even create almost daily and sometimes more often forecasts during the winter that I post to my weather page on Facebook. I also like to do long term forecasting for upcoming seasons. There are some awesome weather forums for us weather nerds to discuss our passion. People that know me seem to come to me anytime they want to know the weather instead of looking it up themselves.

I need to get on some good weather forums but I'll need to educate myself some more as I don't have a great understanding of everything, I know a good bit but probably not enough for a weather forum

Just go read.

You don't have to contribute yet but you'll pick quite a bit up.

Yep, they tend to be very welcome to newcomers. Storm2k and AmericanWx are currently my faves.
I have always been fascinated with weather (winter especially) and I started out majoring in meteorology at A&M, but decided I preferred it as a hobby more than a career.

I grew up on the gulf coast, so it was the topics that first captured my imagination. I too would love to major in meteorology but I have my doubts as to making a career out of it. So it's a hobby for me too. I am in a technical major, so the thermodynamics of it make more sense now.

The physics of meteorology is what held me back. My specialty is using teleconnections to do long term forecasting. I spent a couple years in college doing a study on how teleconnections affect wildfire in the Smokey Mountains.

Very cool.

The physics is what keeps my interest and has helped tie together some concepts for my other classes. The physics though are obvious pretty complex, still a lot over my head but I get a better grasp with each passing year.

I actually did the exact same thing but bailed on the meteorology major bc of being skeptical about a career and the complex science part of it

ETA: Physics likely would've destroyed me

Weather is one of my favorite things about living. It's always changing here in the Midwest. so it can be sunny one moment and pouring the next.

There is nothing better than tramping thru the woods during or after a good rain. The critters can't hear you coming!

I am getting really pumped up about the upcoming winter. It may not be persistently cold like last year, but the atmosphere is setting up nicely for some big time snows in Texas. Last year featured a lot of shallow cold and pretty dry conditions; this year should feature deep cold troughs with a moist sub-tropical jet out of the Pacific.

I used to when I lived in Boulder because the weather was so unpredictable. Like, oh nice, it's 70 degrees today, too bad there will be two feet of snow on the ground tomorrow.

Now in Georgia it's a little bit more predictable and I don't pay nearly as much attention.

I farm so I constantly keep up with it. People who get their weather info from local news people piss me off. Those guys don't know shite. Take NOAA and Accuweather forecasts and make your own assumptions using common sense and you'll be very close more often than not.
