Mama wants a pool I have no idea why though. What are some good options?
I don't know what size or whatever is good.

The only pool that is a good one is the neighbors.
Big arse money pit.

Considering we rent a house in ground isn't option

We have a 21' round, 10K gallon pool, 52" deep. We've had it for 10 year snow. I didn't know how long it would last, but so far so good. We've replaced the liner twice (including this year), and I just bought a new pump this year as well.
They do cost about $500+ to operate each year for chemicals/winter cover/ solar cover, etc.

sms, I've been in the pool and spa industry for 11 years.
I'll lead you in the right direction.
You answered my first question already "How long do you plan to live in this house."
Since it's a rental this eliminates most of your options, of course run it by the mgmt company or owner. There may be something in your rental agreement preventing construction or putting up pools.
What you'll be looking for is a temporary above ground. There's a couple options from the cheapy Wal-Mart Intex pools for $300 that don't come with a proper filter. You'll burn through spa filters on it and have a hard to control and harder to keep clean swamp on your hands you'll tear it down before september frustrated and feeling like you wasted money, time, and energy.
Don't dick around with Blue World Pools either, they're not reputable.
Look around online and find a softside frame pool similar to this LINK
This type of pool is built better and will last longer and still be a pretty simple assembly and disassembly that you can pack up and store for the winter or take to the next house.
I went to a house today with a soft sided frame pool that has been 3/4 empty for 2 years that withstood a storm yesterday that knocked down a huge oak tree in their neighbors yard.
They're the best bang for the buck, get em for under $750, the pump and filter are better quality. I reccommend getting a small sand filter that has a multiport valve where you can backwash and rinse the sand and has a circulate setting in case it gets away from you and you have to do a flock treatment in the future.

There are some things you can't know you don't want until you have one. A pool is second on my list. Had one. Hated the maintenance. Money pit is right.

Any advice you need regarding this, revert to this man. He knows what he's talking about. Honestly.

Don't do it!!!! I have had both in-ground and above ground pools. My favorite day was moving and passing them on to a new fool.
It's like owning a boat, its better to have a friend with one than to have one yourself!

lol. I always tell my customers that having a pool is like dating a cheerleader or any other type of high maintenance woman.
Give it the attention it needs and deserves and it'll be one of the most fun and enjoyable things in your life. Ignore it for 2 weeks, and the claws will come out. Then it will take lots of time and money to get things back right.
Honestly, from what I've experienced families that have a pool tend to be a little closer, relaxed, and healthier. They spend more time together at home, they play around and joke around splashing water and just goofing around, and they get sun, are active, swim and burn calories and the other added bonus it helps the kid's popularity around school. Like the above poster said it's better to have a friend with one than one yourself. I don't mind being the friend with a pool, Sunday Fundays with skimpy bikini wearing girls are a great day in my book.
I'm a horrible business person, I could've racked a family yesterday for over $5K for a new liner and cover. My advice was to just live with the crappy liner the rest of the summer since the back log on liners is really bad right now. Needs a new liner anyway, worst that can happen is you'll swim for 2 months the tear might get worse and we'll have to replace the liner. No one likes getting hit with a $3k bill unexpectedly and her mom is having medical problems and will likely pass away within the year, she had her stomach removed and while I was there her feet turned a crazy blue. I should take the money and do the work but I'd rather them talk good about me than feel like I pushed to just get a check. This lady will be a long time customer because I'm trying to save her money and not slow bleed her like most all other pool companies.
Anyhoo, if you get a pool, just a little time and keeping on top of the chems will keep it in tip top shape.

That makes you a good business person. A lifelong customer is more profitable than a quick $3k

I liked my idea of getting a horse troff but mama gave me the dirty look and started talking about going to Academy. This woman is serious now.
