Don't listen to any of their long, winding, psychadelic type stuff. That could be a turn off for a beginner.
Money and Time off of Dark Side are both good, if not a little long. Those are classics though that should give you some idea.
Fearless is a good song (but the last few minutes is just chanting so you can turn it off after the "song" is done). Wots..Uh, the Deal is a lovely song. I don't know what you're into..if you want more soft and mellow music or stuff a little more hard and kickass.
Their early stuff from 67-about 71ish is still finding their legs. Syd Barrett was the original lead and their first 2/3 albums are pretty out there. He only lasted 1 album. Lots of psychadelic type stuff. In the early 70s they grew up and kind of found their style, and their run of albums from DSOTM (73) to the Wall (79) was just unbelievable.
I can't remember the exact numbers off hand, but DSOTM was on the billboard top 200 albums sold list for something like 700 consecutive weeks.

same here. mellow, chill-out, psychedelic music are not my cup of tea. I prefer hard rock and heavy metal

They have quite a bit of harder stuff, it's just not really what their image is.
They don't have anything approaching heavy metal or Metallica or anything, but they do have a lot of great electric guitar songs.

Was on the Billboard charts for 823 weeks. Longest ever. Second all-time: Johnny's Greatest Hits
Johnny Mathis for 490 weeks. Truly incredible album.
823 weeks is almost 16 years. It was a top 200 album for almost 16 years.

That is mind boggling. And the great thing is it will continue to sell well forever, because each new generation of teenagers will continue to get introduced to it and fall in love with it. You wont' see that with artists like Justin beiber or lil wayne..kids 30 years from now aren't gonna go out and buy those albums. People will always listen to pink floyd.

Comfortably Numb.
Wish You Were Here.
Time.
If one of those 3 don't hook you then it is a lost cause.

Greatest band of all time and the greatest album of all time.
Definitely greatest band and sometimes greatest album for me. The Wall, Wish You Were Here, and Animals are up there as well.
I like going a little while sometimes w/o listening to Floyd at all and then I will just go on a major PF bender and jam out

It's funny, Echoes is what got me into PF. I had a friend who tried getting me into them for a while and he played me all the good stuff but I was just a huge Metallica fan at that point (late 80's). I wanted hard metal and that shite was too slow!
Then me and a bunch of friends went to Grand Isle for a fishing/camping trip and drank some shroom tea. I was open to it then and haven't stopped loving Pink Floyd

Wish You Were Here is up there with DSotM. Animals is a step down, but a step down from incredible is still really damn good.
The Wall is hit or miss. It has some really bright spots and features my favorite song (Comfortably Numb), but isn't consistently as good from start to finish as DSotM or Wish You Were Here.
Still, Pink Floyd had a pretty nice stretch of really great Albums. Jumping ahead to 1992 and I really like The Division Bell as well. They had some staying power and will continue to have some staying power.

Don't start with The Wall. Check out Time, Wish You Were Here, Mother, Comfortably Numb, and Hey You.
If you don't like any of these then yeah, you don't like Pink Floyd. If you do like them, just pop in Dark Side or The Wall and go to town.
