Trequan Smith - Safe or on the bubble?

7 young Saints on the roster bubble going into training camp
Most of the guys included in the article won’t come as a shock to hear as bubble players, but one player I thought was an interesting inclusion was Trequan Smith.
I think we all know he had an up and down year in terms of impact, but the possibility of him not making the team never really crossed my mind. The more I think about it though, wide receiver looks like one of the most competitive positions this camp with a lot up in the air.
Michael Thomas
Ted Ginn
Cam Merideth
Trequan Smith
Kirkwood
Rashard Mathews
Simmie Cobbs
Austin Carr
Lil’ Jordan Humphrey
You’ve got 9 guys going for.. what, 5 spots? I know that number can vary.
Is it realistic to think that Smith really needs to show improvement this camp to earn a spot? What would it take from other guys to earn a spot over him?
This season can’t come soon enough! I’ve snagged TC tickets for each weekend, and I’m excited to watch it all unfold!

Smith has a roster spot. The better guy to question is Meredith.

We'll probably keep either 5 or 6 WR's.
I think Tre'Quan is a lock unless he is horrendous in the preseason. He's a 3rd round pick with 3 years left on a rookie contract. He also showed big flashes at times last year. I wouldn't worry about Tre'Quan.
Thomas is obviously a stone cold lock. Ginn, Tre'Quan, & Kirkwood are pretty much locks as well imo.
The Meredith situation could go any way. He could be cut, make the team, or placed on IR-to return. Nothing would surprise me.
If Rishard Matthews hasn't gotten rusty over the last couple of years...I think he has a really good chance to make the team. That was a very under the radar & very good value (vet league minimum) signing imo.
Cobbs, Carr, & Humphrey are all in about the same category. They're on the bubble & probably need to have a very impressive preseason to make the team.
Deonte Harris could make it as a returner, but he has to beat out Sherels to do that. Sherels is about as experienced as a returner that you'll find though, so Harris has his work cut out for him.

That’s what I think as well.
Smith has a year of starting under his belt, so he’s obviously got that upper hand.
It would take a great training camp / preseason from a couple guys to really make it a conversation.

Wide Receiver Preview
At this point, I'd think Smith, given his draft cost and potential for big games, is probably 3rd/4th on the depth chart.
Everyone else below him has just as many questions, if not more.
Meredith has to show he's recovered from the knee injury.
Matthews has to show he's back on form from 2016-2017.
Cobbs, Carr, Grayson, Butler, Humphrey, and Harris have to show something to unseat Smith.
Even Ted Ginn needs to show that he's healthy after missing much of last season.
At this point, we'll need to wait and see how training camp unfolds. Smith isn't totally safe but he's probably in a decent spot at the moment.

He's beyond safe.
He's the 3rd WR on the depth chart.

Is this a real thread? Trequan, the second year WR, that was a starter last year, is on the bubble?

john sigler sucks at his job
yea dude they want to cut Smith and develop another rookie WR who is not nearly as talented

but he’s facing tough competition from rookies like Lil’Jordan Humphrey

Yeah but Lil'Jordan is already on the first team of the all-NFL name team.

Trequan just fell victim to the camp hype. He was still a rookie WR that was considered raw coming out. He was supposed to struggle and be inconsistent, guys like Michael Thomas contributing immediately are the exception to the rule

Just wanted to hear everyone’s reaction to the article!

Merideth
Cobbs
Carr
Humphrey
These are the guys playing for a roster spot. Smith could get pushed in the depth chart if he does not improve but will still be on the team.

Trequan Smith on the bubble? Lol...
Dude is a 3rd round pick playing like a 3rd round pick. Showed flashes but needs to polish up. If the Saints are worried about a true #2 guy, the pressure for that billet should be on Ginn and Meredith.
Interested to see if Rishard Matthews can come on strong and be a threat opposite Thomas.

Smith caught only caught 28 balls, but 23 went for a first down or TD. He is a roster LOCK as he looks to build upon a solid rookie year
Kirkwood is the regular from last season who isnt a lock. Matthews is going to push him for his job and Simmie Cobbs has better measurables and pedigree if he can grasp the offense

They’ll carry 6 WR.
Trequan was a second rounder last freaking year. He isn’t going anywhere lol
