The way things look right now I’m thinking the Saints go OL or LB in round 1

After the moves we’ve made I free agency, I think the two biggest needs on our team right now are TE and WR. I see a combo OG/C and OLB as our next needs. But I think the value at #27 will be at OL and LB, not TE and WR.

There’s only one consensus first round WR this year, and that’s Calvin Ridley. Supposedly some teams are worried about his frame and weight, but he still figures to be gone by the time we pick at #27. There are no TE’s who carry a sure-fire round 1 grade. Dallas Goedert, Mike Gesicki and Hayden Hurst all have major holes and IMO would be reaches at #27. The Saints may decide to reach since the need is so big, but there will be value there at other positions of need.

Even with the signing of Demario Davis we still need help at LB. Roquan Smith and Tremaine Edmonds will not be there at #27, but either Rashaan Evans or Leighton Vender Esch might. Both guys are instant starters for the Saints and a starting trio of Demario Davis, Alex Anzalone, and Evans or Vander Esch, with Craig Robertson, AJ Klein, Manti Teo, and Nate Stupar as depth is a good LB group.

Even better value at #27 might come on the OL. Several good C/G combo guys are slated to go in the second half of round 1. Isaiah Wynn, James Daniels, and Billy Price could all give good interior depth on the OL for a couple of years, then take over for Max Unger who becomes a UFA in 2020. Will Hernandez will also be drafted in this same area, but he’s more of a pure guard.

Thoughts?

At this point I agree with most statements, however, LB/ CB/ RB need to essentially be off our board unless one incredible value falls to us. I think we need to take BPA from the pool of OL/ DL/ WR with our 1 and 3. But good insite

What are the major holes of the 3 TE’s you named?

I get his point... Mark andrews can’t block, DG hasn’t seen a lot of real competition and people question his blocking, Hayden Hurst is old so is he really worth the value, the one that doesn’t have a glaring weakness is MG from Penn State I think he is the real deal long term.

Hopefully a top tier skill position player slides, and some team trades two second rounders for pick 27

If the Saints draft a LB in the first round, I can't see them paying Klein to be a backup. Either Klein and/or Robertson may be on the chopping block in that scenario. there isn't a true need at o-line that early, with the Bushrod signing (unless they are thinking to find a non injury prone LT).

From the outside looking in, there maybe be a trade up scenario brewing, since the team is in a "win now mode.

I’m of the same opinion..... WR and TE are the top need but won’t be BPA at Pick #27...... a LB or C/OG combo will be BPA at 27.

I think the Saints pick that LB or C/OG combo at 27 ..... then trade into the 2nd round and grab the best TE or WR....... thinking it will be a receiving TE!

Was a possibility for QB trade if Mayfield slipped outside the Top 10...... but the Jets trade with the colts now makes that impossible..... Mayfield not getting outside the top 6.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they reach for a TE in the 1st that they really want knowing that they don’t have a 2nd rounder and figuring that while he might drop, he won’t drop to the 3rd. But your reasoning is sound

The TE group is very Jimmy Graham-ish. Great at some things; turrible at others things.

The most well-rounded is Hayden Hurst. 6-5, 250, 4.67 Dallas Clark-ish.

Where is Hurst projected to be drafted?

ETA: As in what round, not team

The thing that worries me about Gesicki is that no one seemed to have a first or even second round grade on this guy before the Combine. The walterfootball.com website compared him to Coby Fleener.

walterfootball.com/Mike Gesiski profile

Here's what nfl.com has on his AFTER the Combine in terms of his weaknesses:

quote:

WEAKNESSES Built more like a high-jumper than a tight end. Long and lanky with a stride length that limits quickness in and out of breaks. Will struggle to shake coverage on short routes near the line of scrimmage. Play strength is below average. Needs to prove he can handle physical jams and route redirection. Can be slow to get head around and find the ball. Passive approach as blocker puts run plays in immediate peril. Hand usage is poor in run game. Rarely sustains blocks against legitimate edge talent.

DRAFT PROJECTION Round 2

NFL COMPARISON Tyler Higbee

BOTTOM LINE If you are looking for a tight end who can line up and help in the running game, he's not your guy. However, if you want a pass-catcher who can get open and has the ball skills to win against linebackers and safeties, he might be your guy. Gesicki needs to improve his play strength and his issues as a blocker could limit the amount of teams who will target him, but he has a chance to become one of the better pass catching tight ends in the league.

Also fwiw, neither Kiper nor McShay have Gesicki going in round 1

I'd rather see us set good value in round 1 and get a TE in round 3.

Somebody mentioned that TE Hayden Hurst reminds them of Jason Witten, and I can see that. Or even Dallas Clark a little. But has been pointed out, Hurst will be 25 years old this Fall after playing minor league baseball for 2 1/2 years. Plus his blocking is atrocious. There are some video clips of him floating around getting pushed back on a blitz by a CB.

I kid of like Dallas Goedert a bit, but not in round 1. Here's the walterfootball.com profile on Goedert. I know the Saints interviewed him at either the Senior Bowl or the Combine.

quote:

Summary: The 2017 NFL Draft was a banner year at the tight end position with three being selected in the first round and two more going in the top half of the second round. The 2018 NFL Draft is not close to as strong at the tight end position, but one tight end who has gotten some media praise is South Dakota State's Dallas Goedert. There have been some mock drafts that have Goedert going in the first round and rate him as the top tight end in the draft class. However after speaking to sources at a handful of teams, none of them had Goedert graded in the first round.

The highest grade among those five teams was a second-rounder. Two teams had him graded in the third round, and two teams had a high fourth-round grade on him. The senior amassed 72 receptions for 1,111 yards and seven touchdowns in 2017. He put up even better production as a junior with 92 receptions for 1,293 yards and 11 touchdowns.

"[Goedert is] not a great route-runner and wasn't a separation guy," said a NFC director of college scouting. "He is more possessional and doesn't win with suddenness or quickness. He had lots of drops, but you counter that with some spectacular catches. They threw him a million balls, so some drops are going to happen. We just don't see him as a special mismatch weapon."

For the NFL, Goedert has the ability to contribute as a receiver. While he will struggle to get separation from NFL linebackers or safeties, he uses his size and high-point ability to make catches over defenders. Goedert will be an asset in the red zone with his skills to sky high and make tremendous catches with body control and uncanny one-handed skills. Goedert is adept at finding the soft spot in zone coverage, and his size makes him tough to tackle for defensive backs. Thus, Goedert could be a quality receiving tight end in the pros, although he probably won't be elite given his lack of speed, of suddenness, and of an ability to separate.

As a blocker, Goedert has the potential to be a solid contributor in the NFL. He has a thick frame with the size to match up on front seven defenders. Given the big jump in competition, Goedert will need some development in his technique to be effective at sustaining his blocks against NFL defensive ends and linebackers.

A few of the team sources also mentioned that there were injury concerns with Goedert and that his combine medical exam was going to be important. If his medical profile isn't too alarming, Goedert appears likely to be a second-day pick in a weak year at the tight end position. He looks like he stands a good chance of being a third-round pick.

I have seen him on some mocks in round 1 along with Christian Kirk. Not sure I'd call him a consensus round 1 guy.

This is the weakest OL draft in a while. After the number 1 OT and OG there isn’t any worth taking in the first. Kirk is gonna end up being a superstar in the NFL I wouldn’t be mad if we took him either. We also still need Pass rush help for cam Jordan. So if one of the Edge rushers like Landry or key is there we should take them. And depending if we get a good 3 tech in free agency we should look at DTs as well

Good analysis. Wrong but still at least you are working on it. Draft is weak on oline receivers and defensive players in first two rounds, since we don’t have second round anyway doesn’t matter.

They will have to move into Top twenty picks to get impact linebacker but they can get one of top three tight ends staying put and all have chance to be impact players because very deep at this position this year

Walter Football claims we are really high on Da’Shawn Hand, DE from Alabama.

What do you guys think about him?
