Gaia (2021) Quietly Opened This Weekend

While The Conjuring 3 and A Quiet Place continue to attract mainstream audiences, the South African production Gaia opened this weekend. Gaia has been described as an eco-horror film and does some really interesting things regarding shot composition (intentionally disorienting eyelines, line jumps, depth of field, aspect ratio) to add to the uneasy feel of the movie. Gorgeous cinematography and special effects are juxtaposed with a story and atmosphere rising with dread. A truly unique horror (cinematic even) experience.
This, coupled with the recent Censor, has stoked my excitement for what could be to come theatrically post-pandemic. Perhaps described as a mix of A Quiet Place and Annihilation (with a little Green Inferno thrown in), you probably know if this appeals to you.
Don't miss this one on the big screen.
