They apply the rules as written and have the eye in the sky for backup in some cases. Being human they make mistakes but all want to keep their jobs and are graded game by game so they try. At times they succumb to pressure such as the LSU-Alabama game this year where they appeared to try to help the forlorn LSU cause. And Bama fatigue has skewed the penalty statistics against the Tide for years. CU ran 99 offensive plays with zero penalty yards while setting new standards for picks, etc. The Shula game where the receiver was thrown to the ground saving LSU etc. Texas A&M appeared to get screwed vs Clemson then got several close call breaks against the same LSU who benefited earlier.
Over all however and generally speaking the best teams win. In close cases the best prepared teams win most games. And sometimes shite happens. For instance Auburn @ home throws everything out the window and is a special circumstance. And we fans see what we want to see. LOL...

I agree with them being humans. Humans make mistakes, it's inevitable. With that being said, in a game with such exposure and so much riding on it, like the Saints game today, for the officials to say, "Well, we got that wrong." It's a double edged sword. You admit you screwed up but it doesn't change the outcome of the game, when during the game, it mattered a whole lot.

If that call was a play, it’d be Buckner between the legs, a mistake you simply can not make in that situation

Not sure what calls that you're talking about but the non call just before end of regulation during the saints game was as blatant as I've ever seen for someone trying to effect the outcome of a game.
Then the pass interference call at the beginning of OT was as blatant a slap in the face as the no call was. I don't generally watch the NFL and I can't imagine that changing moving forward.

It’s a part time job. You ever have a part time job where there’s very little turnover and hard to get fired? If you have, you’d probably realize that they don’t really give a frick if they do a good job

That human error just effected a city, team, players, business owners, etc. by tens of millions of dollars. Might be a rare occasion that this happens but damn when it does

It would be a bama fan making the claim that refs calls dont make a difference. This is just such a ludicris statement on every level of common sense. It cost the saints from going to the super bowl dummy. Refs bad calls also cost LSU the aTm game.

Rules will be changed because of this just as the overtime rule was changed after the Saints Vikings...but this is much more deserving of the change.
There's no way you can say the Vikings would have scored if they had gotten the ball in that overtime with any degree of certainty.
It is an almost certainty (Vegas said 98% probablilty) that this blatant and obvious no call on two counts (interference and helmet-to-helmet) altered the outcome of the game that decided who plays in the Super Bowl.

Luck? Luck doesn't determine the outcome of anything. Execution and the likes does and when officiating crews fail to COMPETENTLY execute their duties then outcomes are impacted.
