Seeing Saints coach Sean Payton wine & dine FA DL Ndamukong Suh at multiple restaurants over the past 24 hours got me thinking about the similarities and dissimilarities to recruiting. Payton will try to smooth talk Suh into coming to New Orleans then send him to talk with the money-man.

Most important factors to a HS recruit is usually:
-what momma or daddy says
-feels like home
-usually a nearby location in the state or region
-wants family & friends to see them play
-generous bagman/local "mentor"
-playing time
-believes in a coach, his philosophy, his scheme
-can be developed for the NFL
-likes a winning tradition or direction the team is heading
-usually prefers fair weather
-comfortable with regional cultures
-has friends on the team or knows them through the camp circuit
-takes all his visits, sometimes unofficial return visits

Most important factors to a FA:
-MONEY, MONEY, MONEY
-playing time
-sometimes, wants a ring before career ends

Rarely does a FA, who can choose where he wants to go, choose his hometown team or childhood dream team, even if the money is in what appears to be in the same ballpark. Parents wishes don't carry weight, playing for family/friends no longer a need, the record of a coach or team doesn't matter, will forsake close relationships with teammates, bad weather & regional cultures don't matter and a FA will rarely take all his visits, usually signing on the 1st visit.

It's kind of crazy how money makes all their priorities change.

Of course it's all about the money. I read somewhere a while back that the average NFL career last for a shade under 5 years. As a player, you better get what you can because after you stop contributing, you stop earning. Went to school with a couple of guys who made it to the NFL. One in particular went undrafted, but was able to get on with the Colts and was doing pretty well. 3 years later he went to the Dolphins for a larger contract, but then got hurt and the gravy train ended, just like that.

maybe, but let's not pretend it isn't a factor

quote:

the record of a coach or team doesn't matter,
bullshite

quote:

bad weather
let's not pretend this isn't a factor when free agents go to teams in the South

quote:

regional cultures
let's not pretend like it doesn't matter when a small market is going up against NY, LA, etc.

for a HS recruit, i'd add that alumni network and academic rankings are underrated. Most are after all going pro in something other than sports. Tommy Amaker for example recruits basketball players by saying "there's only one Harvard", for example

Jarvis Landry just made all your FA points irrelevant.

And being grown. Not many extremely well paid people in their mid 20s and up are thinking about how homesick they might be if they move away from home.

...that he could have invalidated. He agreed to the trade.

Point is, like I said, it’s “rare” that a FA signs with their hometown team. I could list tons of pro’s born in or near New Orleans, and outside of Keenan Lewis or Delvin Breaux, I’m hard-pressed to list a FA who chose home in recent years.

Ed Reed and Tyrann Mathieu specifically come to mind regarding players who could’ve chosen their home city, at needed positions, for the Saints who in both instances were/are more championship ready. They both chose money for the Texans.

I used to love recruiting. Now I see it as a necessary evil. Give me NFL free agency any day. At least with NFL free agency:

Decisions are generally made pretty quickly.

No hats on a table.

No top 12 lists.

No, "I'm 85 percent committed."

No, "I'm 110 percent committed, but I'm keeping my options open."

No, "respect my decision."

for NFL free agents, they have less creepy old men hounding them over their decisions...

It's funny that you didn't say that some people just want to be wanted/coveted.

Some players, both high school and professional, respond well to whoever demonstrates they want them the most.

There's always recruits that have people saying "why the hell did he go there?" It's because that school made him feel like a king and the bigger schools didn't.
