I want to get proper instruction for MMA or some type of fight sport. I like to box a few days a week, but I think it would be best to have a proper instructor. Has anyone taken a class there who can can provide feedback?

ETA: I’m open to reccomendations of other gyms. The UFC gym is close to my house, so it’s worth asking about.

ETA: The BR Krav-Maga on Airline looks interesting.

UFC gym, ironically enough, is a terrible place to actually learn combat sports these days. It’s basically a spin class with boxing gloves. There is a crew that rolls every once in a while but it’s not that organized and I never tried to join in on that since I was pretty much a novice at the time.

Not sure about the Krav Maga place. I do know Josh Mancuso is supposed to be the best place for BJJ in the area, and there’s Russel Jones kickboxing which is a solid gym as well. Russel Jones will get you sparring quick and there’s a good crew in there. Everyone has been super cool so far.

How much would it cost to train with some Josh Mancuso or Russel Jones?

Russell Jones is 90 a month for 3 classes a week and 120 a month for 5. Sparring is usually reserved for the weekends, no contracts either so you just pay as you go. Will warn you the facility is a little bit run down right now but you can still definitely learn to fight there.

No idea about Josh Mancuso, according to the website they got a promotion right now: 2 weeks, 3 classes, 25 bucks.

My buddy did Russell Jones back in the day. Went as far as to actually do an amateur fight. He loved it just the schedule didn’t really fit his time frame once he got out of college. He said that’s a common problem for most of those places like that, the good sparring/MMA classes are scheduled during the weekdays during work hours

I’ve heard terrible things about that UFC gym when it comes to actual training. Think they have a large female population that goes there to kick a bag and throw fake punches in the air.

Russel Jones is open 2 to 8. For classes he just kind of tells you what to do whenever you show up with additional instruction as you go, and he was making noise about possibly keeping the gym open until 9.

Spot on. Good place to meet women though if OP is single but I believe 50% of them are also banging the trainers from what I’ve heard

I went check out the Krav Maga gym. It’s close to where I work, so I may give them a go. A lot of my LEO buddies say Krav Maga is good to learn because it’s to the point and kind of brutal. Apparently it’s incorporated into MCMAP and is used by the Israel’s military.

I mean I guess that works if you’re planning on getting mugged sometime soon. I don’t know if that’s really considered a combat sport or if it’s even a good workout for that matter.

Try to post an update if you do end up heading there, have always been curious about those gyms.

I’ll post an update. They have a nice gym, and they seem to take themselves seriously. I’m waiting for them to call me and see what costs will be. They said they’ll work with me, so we’ll see.

Krav Maga is not a seriously practical martial art. The 3 legit ones are wrestling, bjj, and Boxing/kickboxing.
I won at national championship in bjj when training at the UFC gym so take it fwiw. Mancuso is pretty damned good at teaching it as well, we trained together for years.
The UFC gym on Perkins can teach you good boxing, but you have to seek it out beyond the cardio kickboxing classes. The one on Sherwood @Coursey teaches BJJ as well. My buddy Thomas Webb, whose a seasoned veteran fighter works at both gyms.

I want to learn to box and kickbox. I just don’t know enough about this to make an educated decision. There are as many fake asses in combat sports as there are in fitness/lifting.

Josh Mancuso’s Gym is just bjj. It’s off Siegen l believe. See what the UFC offers as far as boxing and kickboxing coaching, classes, and sparring sessions. If you can speak to Thomas Webb you try to.

I’m going in for a free boxing class. I will report with feedback. Webb was not there. I’ll for him when I go.

My name is Andy Chapman!lol I got pretty creative with my username on TD.
I was Thomas’ wrestling coach in HS, he lived with me for 5 years, I got him into the fight game, and he was a groomsman in my wedding.
