If we are going to take lumps this next year would rather do so with a TRFr QB developing.

That tells everything about our former coaches. They could not teach some one to read a defense so UF had noodle arm as their best QB. It was so bad they did not realize that Del Rio was their best QB.

Sorry...don't have many lumps left.

No, but DMB and Blood, Sweat and Beers are both right. We need to just go ahead and move forward at this point and let Jones take his lumps.

However, this doesn't mean ''let him drop back like a stereotypical good quarterback, scan the field and then throw it'' which inevitably ends up in a negative play because he can't do those three things.

What Mullen needs to do is keep as little responsibility as possible to let Jones get up to speed with the offense.

Letting a QB take his lumps doesn't mean run your offense the way you want it and just let the other team beat the frick out of him, but it means if we're going to throw someone out there -- let's do it with a guy who has a clean slate and who isn't worried about making plays.

This is almost exactly a parallel to Driskel, who was clearly uncomfortable and because at some point you just assume you're going to make a mistake. Much like small cars and motorcycles, the vehicle follows your vision, so if you expect to fail you will for the most part.

It should be Jones unless Trask or Allen are somehow really good and the coaches once again didn't notice better talent under them.

What it'll probably be are Jones (this year) and then a big quarterback for the red zone (probably the other Jones in 2019) developing behind him. However, a big however: Trask could probably fill that role.

6'5'', 238 pounds running downhill in the shotgun, who can also pass? Yikes. Wouldn't want to stop that on the first yard line.

Only if he is the best QB or equal to the best.

IMO there is never a time to play a player for any reason unless he is determined to be the best available.
To not do this is not right for the Seniors on the team and sends a message that you are writing off this year to be better in the future.

And like I said last year about Franks, he may not be ready or the best option to start the season.

I'm talking specifically about the quarterback position, and it's not an insult to those guys. We have two question marks (Trask and Allen) and one new guy who we know won't be incredible (Jones) but could be serviceable.

I'm willing to write Franks off because he literally does not seem to have a single quality you want in a quarterback outside of size and arm strength. However, he has no accuracy if the pass is less than 20 yards and even his bombs are questionable and more like ''backyard'' football. Chuck it and hope your guy can outplay the other guy.

Unless he has a miracle and is lightyears ahead of Jones, I say just play Jones, let him get accustomed to the system and get him in the fire. Franks had his chance all year last year, and if not for injuries would have warmed the bench. He played one good game, and then completely shite his pants against Florida State.

If Trask was the kind of athlete that could be a Red Zone QB, he would have done so for his HS team. 6'5" 240 pounds is not hard to tackle if they are not athletic.

What makes those guys hard to tackle is when they are quick enough to make you arm tackle instead of shoulder tackle. I don't think that Trask is magically going to be that athletic or he would have started as HS QB. If we still had Appleby, then he could fill that roll.

With Jones as QB, you let him do similar things that he did in HS. The Bama offense with Hurts is doable for Jones. He is familiar with zone read concepts. Run the ball with RPOs, WR screens, and Playaction mixed in. Stay out of third and long. Know where the ball is going and the safety net if that is not open. And if all else fails run with the ball.

I know I am going to get downvoted, but I think Franks can do all of the above and learn from his mistakes. He has the talent to run Mullen's offense and Mullen is smart enough to keep it simple and fast.

The further removed from last season the more I think franks can and will be the guy next year.

I like the size and I like the good enough mobility to get 3-4 yards on a broken play or a designed QB draw.

Plus the running back room ***should be*** good enough to take more pressure off of the QB running the ball next season. I know the QB run is a big part of Mullen’s offense, but if we can get Franks to play within the offense and play without having to think too much, I think he can be successful.

Mac’s offense was so complex that you had so much on your mind that the players played slow. When it was executed properly, the scheme worked at times, but they never were able to simplify it enough where the quarterback could pick it up. They mistaked simplifying the offense for making it predictable, and that all combined to create the clusterfrick that last season ended up being.

Trask was sub 200 pounds before he signed with Florida, a lot skinnier and has put on weight.

I would never downvote anyone for believing in Franks, but I'd need to see considerable advancement from him to even think he has a moderate chance at being QB next year.

If Allen and Trask weren't injured last year, they would both get shots. He got benched multiple times and seemed to regress by the FSU game in regards to protecting the ball, the biggest no-no for a defense full of younger players who are banged up.

I think everyone should watch the videos of the 2006-08 Gators to see the play calling of Mullen. A ton of jailhouse breaks with convoy in front, sideline bubble screens, misdirections etc etc.

In all honesty...we have better WRs now than then. Harvin was WR/RB...but everyone else was just ok imo. Good, but not game changer status like we now have on our team. We didn't throw long much back then....which are low percentage as a rule. Franks can be taught to throw quick strikes to WRs at or near the line of scrimmage....where he doesn't have to worry about pass rush as much. Keep his footwork simple and in practice Dan and Brian will see if he is suitable...if not, next!

Ok sorry. Chill activated.

I thought I would never see worse qb play than 2013 and then 2017 happened.

I’m shell shockef at this point.

Mullen was not shy about running the ball with Anthony Dixon when he took over at MSU and began the process of installing his system. I expect a lot of inside runs from shotgun with a healthy dose of bubble screens to pull the nickel backers out of the box. If we are healthy along the OL, then such a strategy should get us 6-7 wins with barely functional QB/WR play.

The idea behind jailbreaks and sideline quick patterns is to keep the other team from blitzing much...and spreading them out. No one on the team possesses as much of arm strength as Franks...he does have a cannon, his problem was the brain cells and the offense called. We threw deep an inordinate number of times. Spurrier coached teams didn't throw deep as often.

We need to protect the ball, use our RBs a lot and keep the other team guessing when we do pass....and much better special team returns/coverages. With snap experience in the back seven I expect the defense to be better.

I'm just not going to write off any of the QBs we have right now. Who would have guessed that Shane Matthews would have started for SOS in 1990 after being 5th string under Galen Hall. Good coaching can develop a player that was overlooked into a superstar, sometimes. I am confident that whoever plays will be the one that give us the best chance to win and will be better than we have seen since Will Grier's one shining moment. Go Gators

Ultimate Highlight of all incoming players from class of 2018, mute video you will thank me.

Not 2019, but still recruiting and figure I'd keep it nice and tidy here.

Straws, I like EVERYONE we signed. Don't care about rankings or any of that crap. We got us some damn good players imo that will help us win games. The most important ingredient missing for some time has been offense and I'm of the opinion it is on its path to returning to good old days where foes feared our firepower.

WR group is sick. We have Cleveland and Massey already and add Copeland, Justin Watkins, Jefferson, Grimes and Pitts at TE. I really think Watkins needs to be on offense and be involved in return game. Dude seems to have the knack to make folks miss him and can dead leg it and change gears.

I know high school video cut outs are just that, high school....but you can see talent that shines. Pitts may be the future TE we've been missing, has sculpted body already and just needs training table and weight room to make him a better blocker...but he has the hands and feet to drive strong safeties/OLBs crazy.

Gourage will be an asset in a year or two. Emory has body type and footwork that can help us a lot. What I really like about him is the ability to throw accurately while on the move.

On defense we just got us a rusher who will spend a lot of time in foe's backfield....Chatfield is quicker than a church gossip. Dean is going to lay wood on folks and Langham will be player...Burney will probably be on defense and maybe return game.

Got us a very good kicker and could win games for us. The entire class we have is potentially an excellent class overall with good fits, always have attrition but hopefully very good results.

DM is doing the right things so far and the energy level has hiked up. UF can be a meat grinder and if we stock enough mountain dew for him....hopefully that energy level is still very high in four more years. He has said he wants championships and he really feels it can be done fairly soon....I agree. We have the resources, the history and being the flagship school in a state full of talent we should be numero uno.

A few UF crystal balls for 4* CB Kaiir Elam.

Kaiir Elam is Matt Elam's nephew (for those that don't know) and honestly I would be severely disappointed if he didn't come to Florida. I think he has the potential to be a 5* and of course, he'll be able to get rotated in pretty quick because I don't think Wilson or Henderson are going to be Seniors at Florida.

Yeah two more years is all we got with those corners. But they should shine this year and set up all sec hype for 2019.

Hard to recruit players who may ride the bench for a while unless you are downright winning hardware and they see the rewards they get soon....which is what Bama does now. You wait your turn.

I always liked Elam and I remember fondly the play he made against LSU and Beckham when he caught a long pass from the tiger QB...Elam caught him on the sidelines and knock the ball out and recovered fumble...we went on to score only 1 of 2 TDs that day in 2012 when we won 14-6 but really dominated them with Gillislee pounding them.

I mean, it's okay if we start to rotate them. CBs a position we're going to need at a minimum of one year after they come on campus. So any kind of injury (heaven forbid) or really if the guys get gassed, the freshmen are going to get a look. I think we're going to end up making some movies, and right now the depth at CB isn't that high.

We'll get some big names at CB next year, and they'll have almost immediate playing time.

We really, really, need the secondary to play lights out this season though. Heavy hitting, no fly-zone to get recruits excited to come play defense for us again.
