I haven’t run console games since early 2000’s

I was always partial to PlayStation.
He likes Fortnight on PC but My PC sucks. We are going to go the console route.

Where do I start

Do his friends play on a specific console? If so, get that.

Outside of that I would recommend either the Switch or the PS4. The Switch gives a mobile option if you travel a lot. You also have access to a lot more kid-friendly games from Nintendo’s IP. The PS4 on the other hand is the most popular console and probably has the broadest library.

XBox or Switch. He can use the Fortnite login he's using on the PC and it won't be locked on other consoles if you ever get one. Sony doesn't allow cross platform play, and will lock his Fortnite account out of other consoles if he uses it on PS4.

I'd recommend the Switch. It is awesome and he can play it handheld or on the TV. It's the best console to come out in years.

If you're going to do Fortnite, I'd suggest the console that his friends have.

If that doesn't really matter, then I'd defer to what other games you or he may play. What type of stuff did you play before?

How old is pre-teen? If he's 8-12 get him a PS4.

He has outgrown the Lego stuff. We Both played World of war craft and gotten that out of our system. I like fighting games like Tekken and moral combat. He likes Skyrim and Is currently playing Fortnite

Get him a PS4, best and most robust library out of the big three. Plus his friends most likely have PS4 if they have anything.

I'd go PS4 in that case. It has every fighting game out there, so you'd be able to get the new Tekken, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, etc. If he likes RPGs (WoW + Skyrim), then he'll have every single notable RPG available to him.

There are also some exclusive games that you might enjoy playing together like Spiderman or Horizon.

Looks like PS4 is going to be the best bet for us.

that was very important information to omit from OP. Dad wants a toy for himself and his kid lol.

PS4 is the better adult console imo. I bought a X last year. 1st one crashed(not porn related) just from gaming. 2nd one(replaced console) crashes consistently with downloaded games. In addition Sony at this point has the better exclusives.

Switch is a fun get for kids and family games and wouldnt be a bad buy down the road

Well yeah. If he didn’t want one I could do without but if we are going to get one I Might as well get in on that and kick some peoples arse.(My skills are still pretty good for crusty old dad) I played enough Mortal Combat, 007, Zelda, and Mario Cart to teach a college course. I forgot Punch Out and Contra. Oh and I got into my first fistfight over a neighborhood Tetris tournament

Point is I can still hang with most lol

If you want to start them off right you're going to start him at the beginning. Go with the NES. It has tons of classic games and he will learn patience as well as determination to complete them.

PS4: Has most games. Best overall console without question.

Xbox: Don’t know how I feel about this one. In a weird transition of having absolutely no games to a decent amount of gems. Gets most of the blockbusters that Sony does outside the 40 billion exclusives they have.

Switch. Indy paradise. Rarely gets the multiplat blockbusters the others get like Red Dead but in fairness, neither have been able to access their exclusives in 8 console generations either. Can always count on fairly consistent first party games with the occasional frick up here and there.

If they just play FTP trash then go with Xbox and PS4 cause they’re more powerful and consistent. Only difference is you won’t be able to pick it up when someone else wants to come watch TV or something.
