Just came across this. Dr. Ferguson was the Million Dollar Band director during the glory years of the 70s (and into the early 80s). He passed away on St Patrick’s Day.

The University of Alabama is currently mourning the death of longtime Million Dollar Band Director James S. "Doc" Ferguson, who died on March 17 at the age of 85. After working as the band director at the University of Mississippi, Ferguson would go on to become the director of bands and a professor at the UA from 1971 through 1983. Alabama desperately needs a new one. Million Dollar band hasn’t sounded good in decades.

Agree 100%.

The Million Dollar Band has been a massive disappointment for many years.

Question for band guys. Are the instruments set or “tuned” to sound a certain way? Reason I ask is bc The MDB just doesn’t sound as loud as other bands . Ignorant question I know but showing my knowledge

I mean the songs are played very well . Just need a little ooomph for me sometimes

There really isn't a whole lot of room to change dynamics like that with a marching band. The horns are playing as loud as possible in that kind of setting already.

Maybe it would have something to do with the acoustics of Bryant-Denny?

It matters very much where you're sitting.

My son is in the MDB and plays sax.

If you are talking about when they are playing in the stands, they play as loud as they can. Since they play between every play, there are times that the members might not be playing for reasons like going to the restroom.

Also, it is difficult to play as loud as you can between every play of a football game, especially if it is hot. My son's lips were raw after the first few games he played.

Last year they only had 97 members playing at each game when normally there are 400 members at the game.

In the stands when they are together it is pretty loud . I know they can’t play full blast every play It just seems when they are performing on the field it is not as loud . As others have said it could be acoustics in BDS and song selection as well

It certainly depends which side they playing to, when they are marching and playing it will not be as loud for obvious reasons.

Pre-Game when they are standing and playing music they play every day is always pretty loud.

Has not sounded good since Kathryn Scott. I have recordings of her groups and no one could come close to that sound.

Yeah, I’m not a band guy by any means but the MDB has been really vanilla since Kathryn Scott left.

My biggest problem is not the band but the piped in "music". It is so loud I can't hear what the person sitting next to me is saying. It puts a major damper on the otherwise great BDS experience.
