Like many before him, the former Alabama analyst learned from his time under Saban, but the process in Tuscaloosa is not easily copied.

“You can try to emulate coach all you want, but you’re not going to do it,” Applewhite said. “His focus is incredible. His patience is incredible. ... There’s a lot thrown at you as a head coach from the field to off the field to interviews to media to player issues. There are 1,000 things thrown at you as a head coach daily. You have to go in there with your boxing gloves every day. There’s always something. To see him at a place like Alabama with such poise, patience and focus on the task at hand, not getting distracted by things, is incredible. That was a life lesson regardless of whether it was football, family, life, or children.”

quote:

In fact, he sees similar traits in new Auburn coach Bryan Harsin, who he worked with as co-OC at Texas in 2011-12.

“Bryan was great to work with,” he said. “Very sharp. Very detailed. Believed in his process. Relentless worker. No stone unturned. I really enjoyed my time with coach Harsin.

“It’s really no surprise he’s very similar - like I was talking earlier - very focused with the process. If I heard it once I heard it 1,000 times, ‘Do you want it right? Or do you want it right now? Because we’re going to get it right.’ That was his mantra. He’ll be very successful, and I’m very happy for him.”

Love to read this. If he can recruit, he's got the discipline and process to win at Auburn and sustain it. The article a month or so ago about how his dad taught him to be super detail-oriented and process-oriented in drag racing comes to mind. Gonna be a fun ride if Auburn people will be patient in the beginning.

I agree. Some people don't though.

ETA: And it's mostly the older crowd who think Beating Bama is the end all be all.

Allen Greene really did hit a home run with this hire. It's so strange being happy about our coach again.

What is your "end all be all"?
Could we win a championship and lose to bama? I don't think so. They are not gonna stop dominating and winning championships while Saban is there, so to at least shut them up in the rivalry in state is the very important to me with UGA a very close second.

Let's focus on winning the other 11 games on the schedule while we're at it.

I saw folks being upset at the Harsin hire because he's lived in Idaho for basically his whole life and therefore he won't be able to win here, and we should have been happy to beat Saban with Gus and not fire him.

It's strange (and unsettling) for all of us to see you happy

Welp...Winning a championship and Beating Bama are pretty much joined at the hip right now. I don’t see them missing the playoff anytime soon....’specially after that ridiculous recruiting class they just hauled in. So if we are gonna compete for a ring we’re gonna have to beat them. The road to the golden vagina goes through Turdtown for the foreseeable future.

Welp...Winning
Coach

IE: Not losing

... because of failure to coach the second half
... or because of thinking the games already won
... or automatically when away from home (more times than not)
... or due to o'line premature failure (usually 1st three games)
... and not making us look bad in the bowl game

and I'll be happy next year with him... for sure

Maybe not ecstatic but want to see the path forward.

I said from the get go I will not be grading him for 24 months and then it will be of you can see a progression happening. I want it right and consistently competing and winning. Let him ride.

Is this from Greek mythology?

I must have missed that chapter if it is.

Gus chased 5 stars but didn't develop what we got. Tubbs never cracked the top 10 in recruiting but got guys to fit his system and developed them. Hopefully Harsin can get higher ranked guys that fit, and develop them...no reason to think he can't do that yet. Look how many guys Boise has in the NFL and how they were ranked out of high school, it's remarkable. With Auburn resources he should land higher end guys to develop. This recruiting class was a wash but could end up a top 25 class and hit the transfer portal, he kept everyone who signed committed early too. We can get quality depth and hit it hard this next cycle and see what happens. I will remain patient the next 2 season and see how our next 2 recruiting classes look before I judge him harshly, this helped me realize it will be a process, but hopefully he succeeds in laying the groundwork for sustained success. Hope Allen Greene sticks around too, keeps the good old boys at bay, and the resulting success keeps it that way going forward. Look forward to seeing what happens

Too be fair, the cupboard isn’t bare talent wise outside of the lines and back up rb’s

We really do have the horses everywhere else for him to get 9-10 wins this season while he recruits.

I think we showed a lot of patience putting up with mediocre Gus as long as we did.

Did they even have recruiting ranking during Senator Can't Name The Three Branches of Government's tenure here?

No. I want to say rivals retro-ranked the 02-04 classes (May have the years wrong), but recruiting wasn't organized in the Tubs era.
