That is as when he was at Duke (‘05-‘06). The same Blue Devils squad that played at Alabama in 2006.

But he also had a stint as OC at Georgia Tech from 2001-2002 under George O’Leary. He replaced Ralph Friedgen.

Yeah I don’t hold the Duke seasons against him too much. The entire program was a dumpster fire at that time and was worse than many FCS teams, let alone even your crappy G5 schools.

The concerns of him as a recruiter I think are not well founded. He brought in a couple of classes at Penn State that, considering the circumstances, were almost shockingly good.

And as a QB developer his record is excellent. He made Matt Cassel look like a franchise QB. He got great production out of bad QBs at PSU. Competent production out of a dumpster fire QB room at the Texans for a few years. And did a good job developing Watson into a more complete player. I’m sure working with Brady for years at his peak helped some too.

Sure he ruffled some feathers on the way out. But it seems a lot of that was related to his role in running the larger program. As an on-field coach his record was consistently above average in the NFL.

Personality wise, considering the Bellicheck stamp of approval I think him and Saban will get along well. The key will be getting him an OLine coach that’s excellent as that area is out of his wheelhouse generally. He’s more of a QB and skill position guy.

Two sources told me Bill O'Brien is in Tuscaloosa today and there is the good possibility he will take the OC job if everything falls in line. Wouldn't call it a done deal but it's trending that way. It's my understanding there are still a few things to work out on O'Brien's end but it is headed in a positive direction.

Update on Alabama and offensive coordinator target Bill O’Brien (AL.com)

Update (2:25 p.m.): Saban spoke about O’Brien during a Zoom call with Houston media and essentially confirmed that he’s going to be hiring him as Alabama’s offensive coordinator. “I think he’s an outstanding coach and a really good person,” Saban said,  per Sports Radio 610. “He’s got a good family and I think he’ll do a good job with our players here.”

Its funny how people throw what Bill O'Brien did in the NFL up but forget that Sark got fired while having Julio and Ridley at WR.

Nick Saban on Bill O'Brien: "I think he really did a good job in Houston when he was the head coach. I think when he became the GM, things didn't go exactly how he would've liked, having both roles. I know how difficult it is to do both, probably impossible."

"Based on the body of work up until (becoming GM), I think he's an outstanding coach and a really good person. He's got a good family and I think he'll do a good job with our players here."

Confirmed?

ETA: Saban made the comment on a Zoom call with Houston media prior to the pending Bryant Award announcement.

Put me down I love the hire... I also liked the Sark hire at the time.

Saban knows you got to have an elite offensive mind.

Bill just might love not having to speak with the media after his departure from the Texans. Hopefully there will be spring drills.

Saban trusts Belichick who probs served as a reference for BoB. Let’s just hope we got a humble BOB than the one who didn’t know what to do with his power and personality at Houston.

Stoutland may want to come back.

Any new word on whether Stoutland is in play to come back? That'd be a great replacement for Flood.

We'll be missing a good many offensive players last year that helped win a national title this year. Unfortunately for the next coach a lot of fans will measure him by Sarkisian's offense of 2020. Upon reflection of our recent defensive woes, I may be guilty myself.

It's hard to translate NFL success to college, the NFL is a business with many moving parts, the players are all millionaires and a built in system that punishes you for success. As no one was excited when Nick Saban hired Sark I'll give him the benefit of a doubt. But lets be clear, we are going to have to replace 3 of 5 starters on the OL and the QB and RB. plus find play makers to go with Metchie. The 2021 offense is going to have growing pains and no coordinator can short cut that process.
