Is tempo really helping our offense that much?

It seems to me that we had the QB and playmakers to just beat LSU, give them all the time they need. It looked like we were the more talented team but we kept putting our defense in a hole with quick 3 and outs.

I'm starting to think this up tempo thing 100% of the time isn't going to work. And I actually like Briles' system otherwise. I kept finding myself wishing we would take our time, get a good play call in, and just beat them straight up on the field. Tempo has its place but it seems to do more damage than good when you're restricting yourself to going as fast as possible all game.

Considering that when they actually get in a rhythm we usually score in 4 or 5 plays I think it is working. We just had less success yesterday and the downside of it was magnified by our entire 2 deep on Dline being out. I get what you are saying but when they have tried to slow it down like at the end of the Miss St and Auburn games we have looked even worse and not moved the ball at all.

It’s the only edge we really have right now.

The game didn’t come down to that yesterday.

We didn’t convert when it counted and couldn’t run the ball. Throw in some questionable play calls and decisions within those calls by Franks and we lost.

Most competent teams are going to be able to move the ball at will against this D. Especially one with talent like LSU. When they don’t make big mistakes, every game is going to be close/shootout.

It is what it is. We were in the game to win. People here are acting like we got blown out.

When your team is this talent depleted, throw in Covid, the probability of losing close ones is significantly higher and going to be a reality more often than not.

We better get the soft arse zone D figured out against Mizzou or it will be the same story.

I just don't agree with that. Franks is an above average QB. Burks and Woods are becoming elite WRs. Granted our O-Line is FCS caliber at best but I think had the jimmies and joes to beat LSU

Our offense looks really good when we go tempo, IMO. It’s just getting that first first down that’s the issue.

Burks and Woods big plays generally come when we’re running tempo. Go back and watch.

Slowing it down and letting the defense setup just leaves our shitty o line exposed and forces Franks to make more decisions.

Hopefully more players don't drop out because of the covid testing and we can't get the game in.

At least if we do have to postpone the Mizzou game we can use up Catalon’s suspension against Alabama in a game we’re going to lose anyway and have him for the full game against them

That is the problem. If we can't get the Missouri game in and all of a sudden we get all of our players back, we have Bama of all teams the last game of the season. So that looks to be an ugly game and we end the season on a three game losing streak.

We need the Missouri game in a bad way. Our chances of winning are much better and the team can leave this season on a more positive ending instead of having that deflated feeling they are customed to.

Meh, even Petrino's offense only had flashes of what was to come his first year and he had more to work with on that side of the ball.

A key principle of the offense is tempo. Thst comes with good things and bad things.

To be really honest you kinda have to go tempo because your offense isn't necessarily as complex as say a pro style attack.

It's built to catch your opponent in a bad numbers situation and then hammer on that weakness without giving then much of a chance to change personnel or coverages.

None of this matters though if you don't convert a single 3rd down all game.

3rd down play calling wasn't terrible either we just were in bad yardage situations, or failed to execute. Even the time we ran on 3rd and 5 we might as well throwing failed us all game.

Yes. We just need a better 2 dual threat play caller. And a line that can give him some time. There were a lot of times when Franks could have picked up 5+ and fell down behind the line. Also times when people were open down field and he got sacked.

Our Oline is weak, extremely weak. Our Dline is weakened by Covid/Numbers..

Our offense only works with up tempo because of the above and is the only real threat that we have.

Just imagine this offense in 1=2 years with upgrade in recruiting/training. Unbelievable what we can accomplish.
