I have been given a 1 week furlough that I get to choose which week it is. Searching GA labor dept is useless. Can anyone give me the skinny on if I can get paid UE for just 1 week?

Yes. But they taking a minute. Everything is weekly with Unemployment. If they give you eligibility is another story.

You employer can file for you for that week if they wanted to and know how. Many do not know how. But yes, if you are furloughed it is the same thing as being laid off. You are eligible if you meet the eligibility requirements of earnings in established quarters. Basically if you have been employed for more than 6 months or so and that employment was covered.

And for dumbasses who claim unemployment is welfare or some kind of socialist, communist plot it is INSURANCE....just like auto insurance. You EARN it....your employer pays it but it is based on the employees industry experience and payroll. It comes out of your total compensation package...your employer is not reaching in their wallet to pay the unemployment insurance premiums....they reach into the employees pockets. There will be many who will say this is untrue but they are either idiots or do not know how a business operates. An employer is not able to GIVE an employee anything. If an employer is handing out shite willy nilly and not recouping those expenses from customers, as a direct result of the EMPLOYEES labor, the employer is not going to be an employer long....they will be broke. They are not reaching in their pockets to pay for employee costs....the employee produces goods or services, the customer buys said goods and services, and the employer is merely the middle man....he may finance everything, take all the risks, all of that is true....but the only source of revenue is the labor of the employee combined with the raw materials and the consumer buying the end result.

GA unemployment checks used to have on them that "this benefit is paid for by your employer"...typical right winged lie....an employer, if doing the job properly, is in no place to pay for ANYTHING...the employer is a go between from labor/raw materials to consumer. If it costs $100 an hour for an employee to make the goods or services the employer best charge at least $100 an hour for the labor....but if the employer is "giving" the employee anything the employer is not charging $100 an hour for labor that costs $100 an hour and that employer is going to go broke. Now, if I have an employee who is costing me $100 an hour and is only producing goods and services that I can sell for $60 an hour, I have a problem...I am giving that employee something....but that situation is going to correct itself one way or another in a damned hurry.
