I really hope we can hold on to Briles and Stepp for 2-3 seasons. They could really do some damage together on the field and in recruiting.

If Briles can get the offense to monster levels, would he be considered for the head coaching job when Sam is done? Let's say the next three years?
Posted on 9/3/20 at 9:15 pm to dchog
You basically need to pay Briles big money and basically name him the coach in waiting. Let Sam rebuild the team completely and really get recruiting rolling, then hand it off to Briles for the foreseeable future. It may take 6 or 7 years or more. It also depends on how long Sam wants to coach.
I don't care if we have to pay Briles $2M per year... You gotta heep him as long as you can.
Art Briles I always thought would have been the best fit at Arkansas back when Bert was hired. It makes too much sense.

Cart before the horse.
While Briles is a good OC and a young coach with a seamingly bright future, he isn't far enough removed from the Baylor scandal and has the last name that carries the stigma associated that will keep big programs away for several more years, fair or not.
Sure pay him top money for his position, but adding the coach in waiting tag would be similar to Kentucky with Joker or Texas with Muschamp, premature. The CIW tag went out of fashion because of these two, IMO.
He's already been at one program who did the CIW thing and they passed on retaining him, Baylor is out due to his previous stint even tho it makes the most sense for both parties, so your in competition to retain him from being a HC in a greater 5 conference, CIW guarantee can be saved for leverage against a lower tier power 5 school.

If briles can make franks look good I think you have to give him a ton of credit. Mullins is considered a qb whisperer but he could only make franks average.

Scheme had quite a bit to do with that as well. Yes, Merlins is overall a great QB coach, but i dont believe he used da Alpaca/Llama etc in the best way for his abilities.
If we have a decent oline, just watch. Kookaid and all.

Our scheme should be this year what it should’ve been last year.
Franks: “Hey guys, did you know I can throw a football 70 yards?!”
Burks,Knox, and woods: “No shite? Well turns out all three of us receivers here are big and fast as frick so if you can just chunk it way the frick down the other end of the field we’ll go get it!”
Franks: “awesome thanks guys!.” You can call it the manziel/Evans offense

Mullins is a qb whisperer for what coaching tebow and dak? Talk about freak athletes to work with. Mullins struggles when the qb doesn't fit the offense

Not sure I would classify Knox as fast but he should be much better this year not dealing with a hip injury all year like he was last year.
Thought it was interesting that Pittman mentioned yesterday Warren and Hammonds are our top WRs outside of the top three. It’s pretty obvious Briles values speed at WR over everything else.

Knox has good speed but at 6-5 will give defenses problems.
Burks isn't as tall but is by far the most physical and can wrestle balls from defenders hand.
Warren and Hammonds have the speed.

Kingsley Suamataia set to announce Tuesday night and it's expected Oregon. Not being able to get a visit really hurt any longshot opportunity.

Arkansas is the lone SEC representative on the top seven list, although Suamataia had multiple options from that conference. The Razorbacks have made a strong push since the arrival of assistant coach Sam Pittman, who was recruiting Suamataia aggressively while at Georgia. The prospect was named OL MVP at the Bulldogs' camp last summer and picked up the offer then.

Are we taking a look at Javyn Wright out of Vian, OK?
We have Solomon, but this Javyn kid is pretty legit as an ATH. Not sure if they’re family or not.

“I had a pretty good game,” Wright said. “The line, they helped me out a lot and my team was pretty solid. We knew it was going to be a tough game, we had to bear down and play. And then once we got going, we got going.” Wright carried the ball 35 times for 283 yards, three rushing touchdowns and threw two passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. He also converted on two 2-point conversions to help Class 2A No. 1 Vian beat Class 4A No. 9 John Marshall, a matchup that was scheduled just the day before. But even with everything Wright accomplished, his performance didn’t surprise Willis. “Same thing he’s done the last two weeks,” Willis said. “We went to Arkansas and played a [Class] 4A Gravette team, big size like this, he runs for 150 [yards] in about 102 heat index. Last week against Eufaula, who’s one of the best defenses we see, he goes for 249 [yards]. He’s got offers, we’re waiting for other guys to say, ‘Hey look at this kid’ because he definitely can go play somewhere.”

Assuming we leave 2 spots for grad transfers, which positions do you guys think we should target? Could use one for offense and one for defense, or both on defense IMO.
Offense: LT, TE, QB?
Defense: CB, DE, DT
Obviously a lot of it depends on who comes back, if Morgan leaves then LB could be a possibility too. Defensive needs seem more pressing to me. I think we can get by with Kern and Henry at TE and unless there’s a can’t-miss QB out there I would just let KJ and Hornsby battle it out. My fear is that Buster Brown leaves and Hudson Clark all of a sudden is our #1 corner.

We have two QBs already committed so we won’t take anyone else there. Danny has said we’re done at TE so I’d guess none there as well. Honestly, on offense, I think all we consider from here on out are OL.
Now on defense, everything is open IMO. Our commit list is top heavy on offense quality wise. We could stand to take best available at any of the positions on defense.

I appreciate the work you do on this board.
Being stuck in LA it's tough to find recruiting news without dumping money into the useless pay boards.

Real nice jump from Lowery especially considering he was one that a lot of our fans were complaining a out when he committed. The guy has definitely been balling out this year though and his highlights have been impressive.
Posted on 11/20/20 at 12:39 pm to TheCheshireHog
The complaining mostly came from underlying feeling for the Fort Smith kid that was a 4-star who committed to A&M randomly. You are right, Lowery's performances and highlights have shown what a player he can be.
The core of this class will be the foundation of the program moving forward. Those in the 87-90 grade range we need to stick around in the program.

Jayden Johnson re-opens recruitment
quote:
Jayden Johnson committed to South Carolina June 15, but after a tough season and the firing of Will Muschamp, the Cedartown (Ga.) athlete has backed off his pledge to the Gamecocks and re-opened his recruitment.
"I have been considering this for a a little while because of all the rumors about coach Muschamp, so when he was fired, I knew I would be de-committing," said Johnson.
"Him leaving and not knowing who the new coaches at South Carolina will be are the main reasons why I am opening back up. I am signing in December and enrolling in January, so I have to make a big decision here soon.
"South Carolina is a great school and I like coach Muschamp a lot, but I have to look at my other options now."
quote:
"Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Liberty and East Carolina have never stopped recruiting me. Arkansas has been talking to me every day like I never committed and it has been almost like that with Georgia Tech. East Carolina and Liberty have been on me hard too.
"I am going to keep talking to those schools, I have started talking to Mississippi State and Virginia Tech too, so we will see what happens next."
In a normal year, Johnson would schedule official visits and have some in-home visits coming up, but 2020 is not that year. He has done zoom calls with some of these schools and he definitely has his eye on the Razorbacks and Yellow Jackets.
"I have gotten to know the people at Arkansas and I like them a lot," said Johnson. "They have brought me in and made me feel like family. I have been talking to coach Carter, coach Odom and coach Pittman a lot — I like all them. How they make me feel is a big reason I like Arkansas.
quote:
Johnson is completely open now, and he is going to take each call very serious the next few weeks with a signing date set for December 16. He is not sure when he will make his final decision, but he is going to take the time needed to find the "best fit" for him on and off the field. He is looking to go into nursing after football, so the degree will play a role in his decision as well.
