at Florida, what were the expectations for the fans? Were they expecting a national title even though they didn’t have any yet or were they wanting to just be competitive consistently? Just curious. Florida is the last first time national champion.

Gators did well at winning the SEC and defeating Tennessee consistently. Were fans growing tired at some point or were things going well that 1996 was just the icing on the cake?

I know Florida had a national championship caliber program in 1984 and 1985 but it dwindled shortly after.

This topic somehow stemmed from seeing how young Stoops was and when he knew how to coach a defense.

They expected him to do well since he won at Duke, NC was a dream come true. I think fans got tired of winning SEC with no national title to show for it. Switzer has a quote about creating a monster and keep feeding it.

Florida had probation issues in the 80's
Spurrier brought the offense to Gainesville after putting Duke on the map
Arnsparger probably prevented LSU from hiring him
Until Stoops came to run the defense, that's when they became national title contenders
Until Saban came and put the SEC on notice and started running coaches off left and right
Tenn hasn't been the same since Saban beat Fulmer and prevented him from playing for second title
Spurrier didn't want any part of it and left for the NFL payday

Expectations were pretty high. Given how the state had changed, I think most people figured UF just needed the right coach to take off.

He was really good at having people steal signs and it worked well according to some.

Spurrier did not run from Saban. He literally beat Saban his last year here by 30 points. He beat him all four years he faced him by double digits. You are beyond delusional dude.

I've never heard this allegation about him. I wouldn't put it past him but I also believe that most teams do this.

So he was stealing defensive signals as he was sending the plays in to the QB? That is rich. Spurrier didn't even know his own defensive plays.
