What is to blame for our lack of explosive running plays?

Define your version of an explosive play? I thought we were top ten of run plays over 20 yards or more.

Man coverage, stacked box, predictable calls. I’ll add one: our defense is crushing it, so we don’t need a lot from the offense. Classic OMF.

The thing about the running game is not the lack of 30 yard runs. It is the amount of -2 to +2 runs we have. Especially on 1st down. It seems we are bound and determined to run that dive play, even if it is not there. Smart has all but said it is part of his boring, cumulative strategy to grind teams down. I’m a fan of grinding teams down, but feel like we could do a better job at taking what they are giving us.

The stable of backs we have require them to juke players for big plays because most of them have a hard time breaking contact the way Michel / Chubb and others could.

Real men always attack into the teeth of a defense. Going over the top or around the flanks is just plain ungentlemanly. I mean, if the opponent has prepared to defeat certain maneuvers, and then you don't use those maneuvers, you've just forced them to waste time, haven't you? Not very sporting, that.

On 1st and 2nd down, when there’s an 85% chance we’re going to run, and 85% of those are off-center to off-guard/inside the tackles runs, the opposing DC would be an absolute idiot to do anything but stack the box with 8 or 9 and have LB’s shoot the gaps and DL all crash inside the tackles on every 1st and 2nd down. Just playing the percentages.
Which is precisely what’s happened.
And for some reason, Fromm isn’t stepping up there with audible options that are designed to exploit a stacked box.
It’s simply poor play calling and bad play design.
Fromm should be stepping up to the line with a primary play called and then 1-2 audible options that are supposed to take advantage of defensive tendencies, but we just don’t do this well at all.
But I know we can, because Fromm has been exceptional at this in the past. But this year it’s been horrible. And I’m pretty certain it’s not entirely his fault.

Both Sony and Nick were really good at bouncing it outside if the line got stuffed and they would break some big runs. Maybe our guys now don’t have that vision or are coached to hit the gap regardless.

We have heralded memories of Nick and Sony running 30 yards on every handoff but that's your brain playing tricks on you. Most handoffs were 1 yd, -1 yd, 2 yd, 0 yd, then boom.
We're trying to do the same thing, but Swift-Herrien-White isn't as good as Chubb-Sony-Swift.
We got spoiled.
God help us next year.

I agree...but those guys...and Gurley too ...had a knack for stopping and going against the grain if the hole closed.

No team fears our passing game. The defensive strategy against Georgia has been firmly established; stop the run up the middle and force Jake Fromm and his receivers to beat you. We'll see it from now until the passing game is a real threat to thoroughly rout your defense.

Go back to the seasons we had Chubb or Gurley (and lesser extent, Michel) and watch how frequently one of their explosive runs involved stiff-arming or shrugging off a defensive player at the 2nd level. Swift is a fantastic RB but he beats guys by running around them or making them miss completely, not running through contact.
Swift is our best RB but we are definitely missing that tackle breaking element that we've had in the past. Maybe Zeus or McIntosh can provide that but I'm not sure the coaches trust them in big game situations the way they do Swift or Herrien.

I don't remember seeing a pulling lineman at all this year. I'm sure we've run those plays but I just don't remember them.

With the exception of Swift and sometimes Herrien, the backs don't look to bounce outside or cut back against the flow of the play looking for running room.
Zeus, God bless him, just powers full steam ahead into a stacked line time and time again as if he believes that the A-gap is going to mysteriously part like the Red Sea. And yea...that's because of a lack of imagination in the play calling. What worked two years ago, and to a certain extent, last year...just isn't there this year.
And we did have the one 47 yard run by Swift Saturday night...Just wish I could have seen more of that because it would have been worth the price of me freezing my butt off at the game.

This is the weakest group of pass catchers I can remember at Ga. Other than Cager, thank goodness he transferred in, and Pickens, sometimes, it is pretty weak.

We seldom run those plays. Everything is zone or iso.
In order to confuse defensive front 7s in the run game blocking must be varied. We don't do that.

Was watching the UF highlights, and this comment by Danielson about there not being a completed pass longer than 15 yards up to this play wasn't entirely accurate, but he made a good point about our passing game.
We had several longer throws against a respectable Mizzou defense, and I can't help but think that the offense is on the verge of being pretty dangerous. If our downfield passing attack continues to trend upward, then I imagine it will open up our running attack.
