Humans have salamander-like ability to regrow cartilage in joints

Contrary to popular belief, cartilage in human joints can repair itself through a process similar to that used by creatures such as salamanders and zebrafish to regenerate limbs, researchers at Duke Health found.
Publishing online Oct. 9 in the journal Science Advances, the researchers identified a mechanism for cartilage repair that appears to be more robust in ankle joints and less so in hips. The finding could potentially lead to treatments for osteoarthritis, the most common joint disorder in the world.
"We believe that an understanding of this 'salamander-like' regenerative capacity in humans, and the critically missing components of this regulatory circuit, could provide the foundation for new approaches to repair joint tissues and possibly whole human limbs," said senior author Virginia Byers Kraus, M.D., Ph.D., a professor in the departments of Medicine, Pathology and Orthopedic Surgery at Duke.
Kraus and colleagues, including lead author Ming-Feng Hsueh, Ph.D., devised a way to determine the age of proteins using internal molecular clocks integral to amino acids, which convert one form to another with predictable regularity.
Newly created proteins in tissue have few or no amino acid conversions; older proteins have many. Understanding this process enabled the researchers to use sensitive mass spectrometry to identify when key proteins in human cartilage, including collagens, were young, middle-aged or old.

I suspect we are on the verge of fundamentally altering human existence through emerging biotech.
Which really pisses me off because by the time they discover it, test it, and then market it I'll either be pushing up daisies or messing my britches in a nursing home.
I could use a bio-engineering miracle that keeps me alive for another 100 years. I might see another winning season for Arkansas in football if that happens.

Regrowing cartilage is a good start. Now If they figure out how to regrow hair and livers before I get in a nursing home it’s on.

With every medical breakthrough, the longevity and quality of human life improves. At some point we need to think about limiting the number of humans on the planet.
How incredible would it be if there were only 1-2 billion people sharing this world in harmony with the remaining plant and animal species.

Ya, well I’m not going first, it was your idea.

This isn't new. I had reconstructive knee surgery in '93 and the doc also removed about 2/3s of my medial meniscus (it was torn). He told me then that cartilage will sometimes regenerate itself. I've had a few x-rays of the knee since and there hasn't been any narrowing so either it stabilized completely or it did regenerate itself, at least partially.

No one has to go. If humanity would quit breeding like rabbits, attrition would do the trick.

I believe mother nature will self-correct for the population at some point.

And how, exactly, do you plan to do this?
This really outta be good.

I wonder if this means that arthritis is actually a person losing their ability to regrow cartilage, not just the cartilage wearing away.

If you understand who are these so call "God(s)"? I see them as extraterrestrial. They have had influenced people all over the World. They have created us using their own DNA and apes on Earth. The flood was done to put in the hybrids to make them smarter. There have been some so call experts saying there will be another translation of human beings to be more like the extraterrestrials. It looks like there will be another disaster coming. Also they might be doing this to help themselves and us. Another reason is human might not survive the change on earth so the need to make us to adapt to the new environment. There is a show called Ancient Aliens on the History channel. It is on right now! That is one good program.

For starters we could tie birth control in to the aid we give to poor nations. If they can’t feed their own population, why the hell should American taxpayers do it for them?

Not really
We live much longer, that does not mean better quality at the end unless you started with appropriate gene pool. I can assure you at my age I have seen longer is not often better. Especially now with a disconnect between the under 30 and the over 50 age groups. May be the first generation in human history to be raised by corporate advertising over family and community units.

Darwin was not Darwin Award.
In the past skills and intelligence was rewarded with selective breeding. Now we breed the lowest common denominator and took away shame to assure the population explosion was exponential. peak breeding for evolution may have occurred between the Victorian Era and the Cold War Era.

Coincidence, the salamander in pic is sporting Mizzou colors and Mizzou poster did OP.

Interesting fact about me, I had stem cell implant surgery in my ankle for reconstruction in a cartridge void from a traumatic injury.
