This narrative that he can't coach is crazy. He won NBA coach of the year. We have a culture problem. The school doesn't invest in basketball. When money starts being spent I will have bigger expectations

Kentucky talking head on Finebum said he thinks Auburn and Ms St have done less with their talent than anyone in the SEC. IMO, I think Auburn went south with their defense this year. Last year they really turned a bad defensive team into a good defensive team. This year they are not playing nearly as well. John Sunvolt- an espn bball analyst said he would pick Alabama to win a game in the NCAA tournament over Auburn because they play better defense than Auburn. Sunbolt said Alabama is well coached but they don't get any easy baskets so they have all these close games. It appears to me that our coaches have decided to pull back on 3 pt shots, shorten the game and try to gut out close, low scoring games with defense and effort. We did get the turnover and easy basket late in the SC game (Riley Norris)that probably won the game for us.

He was also the same coach in the NBA he is at Bama: inconsistent. And in a league notorious for recycling old coaches no matter their record, he couldn’t get another job. That should tell you something. It should also speak volumes that even as friendly as he is with his hometown Pelicans ownership, they are considering him for a front office job, not the bench.

He seems well suited for a GM job. As a coach, he’s too much of a players coach, especially for the college game.

You can't compare coaching in the NBA to coaching in college. If he was such a great NBA coach, he wouldn't have been begging for a job at the collegiate level. The NBA was done with Avery as a coach.

Yeah, Pearl and Howland have underachieved this season.

Miss St has some serious talent + 2 star upperclassmen guards -- that's college basketball gold.

They could certainly still have a good tourney run but expectations were battling Tenn and UK for the SEC title with Auburn not far behind.

Mississippi State is 8-4 in Q1 games, 21st in KenPom, 22nd in NET. They're being undervalued a bit in bracketology right now imo and I wouldn't say they've underachieved at all.

They were picked to compete with Tennessee and Kentucky for the SEC title and finish well ahead of LSU.

They have the mix of young talent and experienced stars in the backcourt to have done just that and remain a Top15 team, at least, all season.

The reason they haven't and are being undervalued in bracketology is that while 8-4 in Q1 games, they're only 4-3 in Q2 games in addition to some wins in Q3 where they looked pretty mediocre.

I think they have a good chance to make a big run in the tourney and do seem to be playing better recently, especially Q Witherspoon being singularly unstoppable. But, they haven't really had the season so far most picked them to have either.

He got me this year, but I won't let it faze me. They will take a step or two back next year, and I will be Jonnie-on-the-spot to point out that this year was an anomaly and that Bruce got lucky. I will also throw in that he can't win the big one, even though he didn't ACTUALLY play in the "Big one".

Every negative thing will be confirmation bias enough for me.

I upvote you OP for bumping your prediction about Pearl and humbly admitting you got it wrong. Will AU make the ncaa tournament consistently whilst Pearl is their HC, yes they will but I’d be shocked if AU goes to another final four anytime soon. That’s hard as hell to do.
