Per VQ, Tee was out on the road today goon wrangling while Kelly was pulled off. Kelly’s name has been mentioned as a candidate for DC at Maryland iirc

Sources tell FootballScoop that Tennessee safeties coach / special teams coordinator Charles Kelly has been offered the Maryland defensive coordinator job. We are told Maryland expects Kelly to accept the position and a deal could be in place as early as this evening.
Kelly just wrapped up his first season on the Vols staff and prior to that he served as the defensive coordinator at Florida State for four seasons under Jimbo Fisher from 2014-17.
He stepped from special teams coordinator and linebackers coach into the defensive coordinator role for the Seminoles after capturing the 2013 national title after Jeremy Pruitt left the staff for the defensive coordinator job at Georgia. At Florida State, Kelly coached 12 eventual NFL Draft picks, including an impressive nine first-round selections.

TBH, I was very disappointed in special teams play this past season. Other than the kickers/punters (who basically do their own thing) it was mediocre to horrible at times.
Safety play wasn't that bad but ST was just ugh.

I never understood having two DB coaches in the first place considering that’s supposed to be Pruitt’s area

I have to think that if he's being hired for a DC role then he was doing more overall on defense than his formal job title entailed but who knows. I think we'll be fine without him given Pruitt and the rest of the staff but I DO want special teams to improve dramatically. Whoever takes over there needs to actually, ya know, practice special teams.

Member when we couldn’t even lineup for a punt without getting flagged? I member

TBH, those missteps took me back to the Dooley Era. If other things hadn't shown promise under Pruitt that would've been a killer red flag for me. Hopefully, Pruitt takes the Maxims to heart this season.
It's not acceptable anywhere, but especially at Tennessee, to have poor special teams play.

FootballScoop Staff @FootballScoop When last night came and went it didn’t feel good for Maryland. This AM source tells FootballScoop Charles Kelly is planning to remain at Tennessee.

Are we of the opinion that we would like to keep Charles Kelly? I kinda thought our ST was questionable at best.

I don't think he's a bad coach. However, I think Tee needs to be on the road recruiting regardless so whoever needs to GIT to make that happen then so be it.

He's obviously a good defensive coach (at least his peers think so) so it's a win that he's staying but I still question his special teams work. That along with the OL were the two worst performing units. I have no problem with what I've seen from him on defense but I hope ST improves greatly this season.

I agree. I feel like we should have a special teams coach that strictly focuses on special teams imo. The secondary should be fine with only Fair and Pruitt

Tennessee safeties coach/special teams coordinator Charles Kelly does have an offer to join the staff at Alabama, our sources have confirmed. However, it's not yet a done deal. We're told Kelly is considering the offer, but has yet to make a final decision, though one person told us he was leaning toward leaving Tennessee. Not sure what position he might have on the Crimson Tide's staff. Kelly was offered the defensive coordinator job at Maryland earlier this week, but decided to remain at Tennessee, which pulled him off the road recruiting while he considered the Maryland offer.

Also John Brice says David Johnson was pulled off the road from recruiting yesterday too. Could Jay Graham be coming home?

RB - Graham
WR - Tamaurice
TE - Nerdmeyer
OL - Friend

Would be happy to have Graham back home, but I'd hate to lose YAC

It's why I said pump the brakes when it was reported he was returning to Knoxville after deciding to not go to Maryland.
Recruiting is going to be a priority for Pruitt's staff. The next move will please many.

Confirmed that it's not going to be Graham unless another Offensive coach leaves. It's gonna be someone from the defensive side of the ball. If we can get someone to take Weinke then the door is open
