It seems like a completely open competition at this point. I give Shrout a redshirt year because of how raw he is.

I think that it will be between JG and Chryst. If JG develops some accuracy in his passing game then I think the starting position is his, but if he is unable to find consistency I think that it will ultimately end up going to Chryst.

In the end, I think/hope JG develops enough to win it.

Based on talent JG should win the spot

JG and he will promptly get broken in half in the opener

Have you seen him? He's a ton bigger than last season.

Beyond that, West Virginia has had some sort of weird transfer problem on defense. They only have 4 scholarship DL left. In the past few months they've had 14 transfers 8 from defense. They'll be hitting the summer transfer circuit hard to try and find replacements.

It would still be our luck for him to get hurt in the opener but hopefully we catch a break on the injury front this year.

I think I saw where they picked up a former 5* DT transfer? I didn't see much beyond that headline.

Also, I think JG starts. Chryst looks solid but will be behind the 8-ball coming in after Spring ball. But I like the depth.

Lol... coach Stephen's players don't get broken, they break...

Not themselves, others, we are the predominant force doing the breaking, of others, not of ourselves. There will be breaking happening, it will just be the other team receiving those breaks though is what I'm trying to say.

It's just that I wanted to emphasize that while there will be breaking happening, our players will be the ones doing the breaking, not themselves being broken. That statement, talking in this context, just leaves room for interpretation. We get to game 1, 17 of our players break something on themselves, not on the other team, in this instance we were the breakers, as well as the breakees, you guys are going to be pissed at me for not caveating.

I just then wanted to make clear that while our players will be the breakers, and commit the acts of breakage, we will not also be the breakees.

I hope JG can get his accuracy dowm. Love his athleticism, but not big on accuracy. And everything ive read out of spring is the same issue, accuracy

JG's flaws last season were more in not getting rid of the ball quickly enough. He took too many sacks but he was also behind an epically bad OL with a epically bad OC calling plays. Accuracy was actually pretty good when he threw the ball but they barely called passes beyond short yardage - likely because the OL couldn't block. WRs last season were lost without Jennings. Callaway and Johnson were still learning although both should be a lot better this year (I do expect the WR corps to take a step forward this season).

If JG can make decision more quickly with where he's going with the ball I think that will help a lot. The game was too fast for him last season and the lack of protection only made it that much faster. The arm talent is there with JG no question. He's athletic but he's not Dobbs. To use an imperfect analogy, he's a pro-style QB closer to the Clausen/Martin mold (can scramble and make big yards when you're not looking) than the Shuler/Dobbs (can run like the wind and running by the QB must be accounted for by the defense on every play) mold.

At any rate, I don't think last year's passing game woes were the fault of the QBs. There were simply too many things going wrong from OL to WR to a first time OC to none of the QBs we played having had prior experience beyond a few backup snaps by QD. A lot of areas have to improve rather than just one position.

The good news is that I know for certain we've taken a step up with our new OL and WR coaches and am almost 100 percent certain that the new OC is better than Scott.

Lot of rumbles about Chance Hall coming back both from Pruitt and Hall. I know he's injury prone but with how incredibly thin the OL is right now any quality snaps he can provide would be a huge boost.

Any ideas as to Trey Smith’s situation?

Last I heard they think he'll be back for Fall practice. They'll redshirt him if they have to but right now things are going well on the health front for Trey. (That was a few weeks ago).

Of course, other reports are a more dramatic with 'future uncertain' and such. We really won't know anything for sure until fall and since it's a medical issue rather than an injury issue there's always the possibility that it ends up being bad news.

I had forgotten there as even an issue with him, the rumor mill providing insight into what is actually going on with him?

We need him desperately

I hope he gets back ASAP. He is a fantastic player and should have a very long NFL career with his abilities.
