Vanderbilt’s Jayson Gonzalez was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week after helping the Commodores to a pair of Top-15 wins, the league office announced Monday, 3/12.
Gonzalez hit .364 with five RBIs in three games for the week. The California native posted a .462 on-base percentage en route to becoming the first Vandy player to earn an SEC weekly honor this season.
The third baseman belted a solo home run and accounted for all three of Vanderbilt’s RBIs on Wednesday at Long Beach State. He also scored a pair of runs and reached base twice in a 6-3 victory at No. 11 UCLA and drove in two runs in a 7-4 win against No. 8 TCU on Sunday.

Vanderbilt Freshman Mason Hickman was named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week after helping the Commodores to a series win against LSU, the league office announced Monday, 3/26.
Hickman shutout the No. 19 Tigers as part of a seven-inning, complete game performance to clinch a 1-0 victory. The win moved Vanderbilt to 5-1 in the SEC, matching Georgia for the best start in conference action.
Hickman did not allow a hit after the second inning, retiring 16 of the final 18 batters he faced including sitting down 12-straight at one point. His nine strikeouts marked a career-high.
The right-hander ranks fourth in the SEC in opponent batting average (.180) and is one of three freshmen nationally to boast a 5-0 record.
