In a letter from Chancellor Vitter to the students,

quote:

October 6, 2017
We are proud of our students and their leadership and active engagement as important members of our university community. We recognize that their efforts stem from a desire to unify the Ole Miss family. The results of the Landshark poll confirm the sentiments that Ross and I have heard since arriving on campus — that the Landshark and “Fins Up” have become synonymous with the positive spirit and strength of our athletics program and the “Never Quit” attitude of Rebel Nation.

Upon learning of the ASB poll of students, we sought input from the executive committees of the Ole Miss Alumni Association, the Staff Council, the Faculty Senate, and the Graduate Student Council, as well as from the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Spirit Squad head coaches. In each case, the support for the Landshark mascot was unanimous. In addition, the past presidents of the Ole Miss Alumni Association and the boards of the Alumni Association and M-Club enthusiastically endorsed the action of the Alumni Association executive committee.

Indeed, the growth of the Landshark mystique over the last seven years has been phenomenal with every athletics team embracing it, including such standouts as Marshall Henderson with basketball and Kaitlin Lee with softball, in leading their respective teams to SEC championships.

Today, I’m excited to announce that we will move forward with the Landshark as the official mascot and retire Rebel the Bear. Athletics will be charged with designing, developing, and launching the Landshark mascot, with an anticipated unveiling before the 2018 season.

In closing, I want to state unequivocally that we are — and always will be — the Ole Miss Rebels. And I am asking all Rebels to unite around our new Landshark mascot.
Hotty Toddy and Fins Up!

Chancellor Signature
Jeffrey S. Vitter

Meh, its better than the black bear. tRant trolls keep saying how embarrassing the Landshark is. I don't really get it . I thought the Black bear was embarrassing because it had nothing to with our school or team. At least the Landshark was originated by the football team in the Swamp, while beating the '08 National Champs (Not a bad start to a tradition). Its also spread across sports with Basketball and baseball players doing it. I'm not embarrassed at all. I accept the fact we're never getting back Colonel Reb, and I'm happy with the Landshark.

Seems to me that if you are intent on calling yourselves the Landsharks, and deriving your name from the very fact that you are a Landshark on defense, then you can't give up 66 points in a football game. Ever. Or you lose the right to call yourselves the Landsharks. But that's just me.

Troy just beat LSU in Tiger Stadium. Its not exactly Death Valley, but are they gonna stop calling it that? Do they lose the right to call it Death Valley now? No, their fans will still call it Death Valley.

It's Landshark vs Black Baer, What would you rather have as an OM fan?

I agree, the timing of this is what is stupid and embarrassing.

LSU didn't just vote to change it to Death Valley in the midst of what will by all accounts be a cripping NCAA investigation coming off a losing season during an already down year.

"Hey... I have an idea... last season we were 5-7, the NCAA is going to neuter us, we have an interim head coach who can't... let's rename our stadium Death Valley."

Look, I get that the timing was bad.
I don't care if our Defense just got wrecked. The vote was thought up before we lost to Bama. Also the Landshark has spread through the entire athletic department over the past 9 years. I don't look at it as just a name for our defense on the football team anymore. And you never answered my question. Out of the two choices, I'll take the Landshark.

Yeah, the timing was a bit off, but it's unique and that's the best part. Our current on the field football struggles will be just a memory one day, and the landshark will be a cool thing for all ages.
