He remembered being a defensive coordinator after a bad defensive game and having to do postgame radio. He and wife sat in the state trooper’s car as they went from the locker room to radio location.

Chizik knew the car would be winding through an unhappy set of fans, so he decided he would make at least one of them happy by tossing a 100-dollar bill out of the car. Then his wife suggested making two people happy and throw out two 50-dollar bills.

“About that time, the state trooper looks at me … in the rearview,” Chizik said. “And he goes, ‘I got a better idea. Why don’t you throw yourself out the window” and make everybody happy?

“I can tell you standing up here right now, I know what they want,” he said of the players’ future coaches. “They want to see you walk into their facility on day one not acting like you’ve had a silver spoon in your mouth in recruiting.

“Everybody’s telling you how great you are. But no player wants to see you come in there with an arrogance and entitlement that somebody owes you something, because nobody owes you anything.”

Chizik, who said the disappointment of getting fired was more than countered by the substantial time he has spent with his family, had one succinct piece of advice to the multi-star recruits.

“Eighty-five percent of the guys that come into and report to camp after signing day are in the worst shape of their life,” Chizik said. “They got it done. ‘It’s all good, man, I signed my deal.’ You want to impress your coaches? Walk in there day one like you’re trying to earn a scholarship.”

Well I will give him props for not being a bitter man about it and taking it in stride.

Seems like a few players didn't take his advice.

No harsh feelings for the man. He fulfilled some of my best memories and also some of my worst. Hope he lands on his feet

Chizik was a good guy, but like many before him, he did not know how to handle success. I am sure he understands that he made mistakes, but he truly was blessed to be the head coach at Auburn. Hope he has success in the future.

BTW: He has told that joke since he came to Auburn...
