Damn. I was born in '90, so Petty was the first QB I can actually remember playing and being old enough to really be engaged and know what's going on.

One of the most legendary quarterbacks in South Carolina football history, Phil Petty, has died. Petty, 43, was a three-year starter for the Gamecocks under former head coach Lou Holtz.
Petty was a part-time starter in 1999 but took over fully in 2000 when he led the Gamecocks to an 8-4 season, which included a berth in the Outback Bowl. As a senior in 2001, Petty brought his team to another Outback Bowl victory but also saw individual success as well as he was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Award, given to the nation’s top quarterback.
In his final two seasons with the Gamecocks, including as a team captain in 2001, Petty completed 306-of-547 passes for 4,079 yards with 17 touchdowns. The team was 17-7 over the course of the two years. He oversaw the greatest single-season turnaround in NCAA Division I history as the team went 0-11 in 1999 before going 8-4 in 2000.

Just terrible news. 43 with a young family.

Rest in peace. Petty was basically the first Gamecock QB I ever saw in person and probably the first one I actually remember... born in 1988 here. Didn't even really get into watching CFB all that much until around 2000/2001 and I fond memories of knowing exactly what I was doing during those Outback Bowl wins.
