This is true. Love Duke's, really can't stand Hellmans. My fiance (no pics) is from CA and had never even heard of Duke's. She immediately conceded to its greatness.
Also, I believe Duke's was created in Greenville.

Mayo is pretty bad.. but inevitably you will get it on your item if you hit up fast food every now and then. I hardly do, but I will say no mayo and end up with it sometimes and it doesn't ruin what I'm eating. I just don't prefer it... but in a Philly cheesesteak for instance a little mayo coating the bread isn't bad. But globs of mayo is gross.

I use mayo instead of butter on the bread in a grilled cheese

Home made Mayo is the nails but if you can not make it at home, Duke's is the only acceptable store bought mayo. Miracle Whip is crap and a sure sign you have Yankee blood in your veins.
Granted I am old, but in my youth if you ordered a salad in the South, this is what you got.
Bed of iceberg lettuce
Scoop of real cottage cheese
Slice of Tomato / Peach / Pineapple
Dollop of mayonnaise on top
If they were fancy you might have paprika sprinkled on top
That and tomato aspic were the "salads" of my youth.
