It’s a travesty that Will Anderson was not even a finalist for the Butkus Award.

He should have won it, honestly, but at the very least he should have been a finalist.

Apparently the Butkus Award people made the arbitrary decision to focus on inside linebackers this season. Michael Cassagrande of AL.com recently asked the Butkus Award people why Will Anderson wasn’t being considered:
quote:

For those questioning Will Anderson not landing on the Butkus Award finalist list, I reached out to the group awarding it.

They said they were prioritizing traditional in-the-box LBs and they considered Anderson to be more of a hand-in-the-dirt edge rusher.

Game against A&M really hurt him here. Lots of eyes saw a true freshmen tackle hold him to 0 sacks, 0 tfl, and 1 solo tackle.

There you have two answers
One from the committee and one from the A&M guy

Bowers.

He can't block for shite, but he's the second best player on their team behind their punter.

Well, thats a reasonable explanation. Guy is essentially a DE.

Happy for the people who win them, but ultimately these type of awards are pretty dumb and often times people get skipped for the dumbest reasons.

Most of them didn't even exist 20-25 years ago. They were just added so ESPN could make another TV show.

The Heisman is the one that's been around the longest. And it claims to be about the "Most Outstanding Player" and yet defensive people aren't even included. The one time a defensive guy wins, it's because he returns punts/kickoffs.

Does anyone really believe that the most outstanding player in football just always happens to be a QB, RB or WR? And most notably, usually a QB, followed by RB, followed by WR. Why? Because it's really only an award for touching the ball and who the media can hype up over and over with stats and highlight film.

Either fix that shite, or stop claiming to be an award for all of college football when you're just a glorified offensive award.

Needless to say, I won't be watching any of it. Haven't in over a decade. Grats to Bryce Young on winning it(my guess).

He’s still an outside linebacker, even if he predominantly pass rushes. It’s never been said that the Butkus is an inside linebacker award until now when they’ve suddenly decided that they wanted to focus on inside linebackers this year.

All I'm going to say is look at Damone Clark stats vs Dean stats.
