By naming their popular assistant to head coach they keep him, possibly more of the current coaching staff and most importantly current recruits

Honestly they will probably be better without Kelly. BK was only worried about BK. Freeman and Rees will not miss a beat and might actually win a playoff game.

I get moving the popular assistant to the head job but I would shake up the staff.

Get his own people in there, make his own influence on the team. Not keep half of the old coaches staff/philosophy.

I remember LSU doing something similar and y’all said it was the dumbest move ever

Interesting

The current staff has been getting 10-11 wins for several years. No Brainer to keep it going.

Lol only here would hiring a first time head coach at Notre Dame be thought of as a brilliant move.

That's what Joker Phillips did to Rich Brooks' guys and its exactly why he failed here, do you not remember that?

He's going to fall on his face. Notre Dame is not the place to train as a first time head coach. He's ecstatic now, but he'll regret taking the job in 3 years.

The blame here really isn't his. It's Notre Dame's, who should know better.

I guess we will find out soon enough if it was Kelly or his staff.

I think most could see O was a train wreck waiting to happen . Freeman seems like a great young , professional person capable of running an organization

Freeman is going to recruit his arse off at ND if he is indeed the HC. They have a top 5 class right now. ND didn't recruit that high till Freeman was on staff.

If the Tom Lemming stories of Kelly not recruiting all the Catholic HSs across the country hard enough, then Freeman can take advantage of that.

I didn't say that. If they are promoting from within then a first time head coach would be smart to try and keep a successful staff together.

That’s not the big deal. It’s been circulating around for a couple of days that the CFP folks, rightly or wrongly (the latter IMO), had signaled to Notre Dame that not having a coach in place could impact their status as far as the standings.

If he wins a playoff game or somehow the title for ND tRant will be required reading the entire offseason

I think that trying to continue what Kelly did for 12 years with a different HC isn't a great idea. It might end up being one but it looks like a bad idea. Again that's just my opinion.

And Joker was a fricking terrible head coach. It didn't matter who made up his staff.

Crazy that Freeman goes from Cincinnati DC to Notre Dame head coach in one season.

Sometimes you're in the right place at the right time.
