How did UCLA, VT and OK State get better hires than the SEC openings

other than LSU.
Are the pressure cookers in the SEC less appealing than they used to be? The stress and pressure from fans and boosters not worth the little extra money when other players can pay as well?

That’s a no-brainer to choose VT or Oklahoma St over Arkansas, Florida, Ole Miss and Auburn

Franklin, for one, had already been in-conference, and wouldn't have been appealing to anyone other than USC or UK. Neither were open when he was finalizing with VaTech.
OK State is always going to have ties to Texas, and only Arkansas would have been a fit there. Not sure he was ever in play for the Hogs, and I'm not sure if that was on him or Arky.
Chesney is the wildcard. UCLA isn't a good job. I figured he would have stayed at JMU for another year and see how the 26 openings went.
But to answer your original question, it's a pressure cooker. Some guys thrive on that and chase it down. Others would prefer a relatively easier path.

Nah. I’ll take Golesh over any of those guys.

UCLA could have potential to be a much better job. Their administration is shitty though. Maybe Chesney got some reassurances that he will be able to spend the money needed to get the program back to respectable.

He will make fine coach comrade! If no, we send him to gulag!

If they were still in the Pac12, then sure. They could be up there with Oregon, Southern Cal, and Utah any given year.
Being in the B10 is atrocious for them.
Good friend is an alum. That program is deader than a doornail.

UCLA has apathetic fans but the pressure of LA sits squarely on usc, they have money, like make vandy/unc blush money and you have enough talent in Cali to be a top 25 team even with usc and Oregon getting first pick. It’s a tough job for sure but the right coach could win big there. Toughest part would be getting the bruin war machine rolling

Apparently Franklin interviewed for the AU job and just didn't get it.
Good luck in Blacksburg.

Yes.
And with the 9-game conference schedule, fans will either adjust their expectations or some schools will eventually quit putting the amount of resources into football that they are currently putting in.

With 12 team playoffs a big 12 or ACC school is more appealing since it’s not a g5 and isn’t the pressure cooker of the sec
It’s easier to get into the playoffs there
Honestly wouldn’t be mad if Florida joined the ACC after seeing how our terrible 3 win team handled fsu

I don't think this is true
But I do think Chesney is arguably the most intriguing hire of them all, including Lane.

I had to look up who OK State's hire was.
How is getting the North Texas coach who went 22-15 better than anybody who the SEC hired?
I'm unhappy with the Sumrall hiring, but he has a better resume than OK State's new coach.

It's close but I think turning North Texas into a winner is a better accomplishment than continuing to win at a place like Memphis or Tulane. Golesh could be better than Morris yes

I'm not sure they did, but time will tell.
I think UCLA getting Chesney was a fantastic hire. Morris is a total wildcard. He took over a program that went 13-13 the 2 years before and went 11-14 in his first 2 seasons before having a great year this year. That's quite a gamble.
And while Franklin has a high floor, we'll see high how his ceiling is there.

SEC full of old, stupid, good ole boys.
Franklin should've been #2 for UF

Alabama, Georgia and LSU are going to keep pushing all-in. I don't think Texas and Oklahoma are going to back down. Tennessee just fought through a decade of hell to get back into the mix, I don't think they're going to tap out now. A&M will continue to spend a zillion dollars to be in play, and now they have ego (will they slide behind Texas Tech and SMU instate?) working too. Auburn is desperately trying to get back onto the merry-go-round too.
Florida and Arkansas, not sure where their hearts are. I thought Florida was going to try harder, and Arky should be able to harness some of that Walmart money.
You have the lower tier SEC teams, all taking turns at being good. Ole Miss with Kiffin, South Carolina got a taste with Spurrier, currently Vandy riding the Pavia wave, Kentucky got to 10 wins with Stoops a couple times. Even Miss State makes runs at being respectable, although that seems to be more on "we'll play you hard" than in winning. Those are the programs I don't think are willing or able to keep up.
Not sure where to toss Mizzou into this. They seem ok as long as they get 8 wins, either no desire or not enough resources to make the big push.
