Tonight is an example of the playoffs taking away what made CFB great

Aggy loses, they go to the playoffs anyways. In the old days, they lose, and they go to the Cotton Bowl best case.
If Aggy loses and goes on to win the Natty, nobody gives a frick about this game.
Just like Iron Bowl 2017, I don’t give a shite to this day that Auburn won that game. We got the natty.
It’s even worse with 12 teams. frick the playoffs. If this was BCS days you could cut the tension with a spoon and Aggy would be puckered up. But tonight, it doesn’t matter

Bama would already be out though

It’s all about ratings now. CFB wants to be the NFL

And I’m fine with that, we lost two games…
I still prefer the old days of lose one game and you’re probably toast. Made these rivalry games so much better

Then it would just be Ohio State vs. Indiana in the title game. Screw that. I prefer a playoff instead of having a computer or committee decide who plays for the natty.

I miss the poll era honestly. I know I'll be in a minority, but bowl season was great in those days

2011 Game of the Century didn’t mean anything. You Gumps had 30+ days of poster material for the rematch. LSU lost that game before it kicked off.
Just some perspective.
Some seasons are different.

It did at the time. But when Oklahoma St couldn't handle their business it changed the landscape.

I’d agree with you if that was the last game of the year, but the season still had 3 more weeks and included an ISU loss. I’m specifically talking about the last regular season weekend of the year. Didn’t matter for OSU last year, won’t matter for Aggy tonight, things are already set.

The playoff are superior, but they take too many teams. Cut it to 8.

It’s almost like people don’t remember college football from more than 10 years ago. Sure it happened that one of the two teams might have played a cupcake schedule but then they would be exposed. See Notre Dame in 2013. It was extremely rare that the championship was 2 undeserving teams prior to the CFP.

Sure but that one team took the spot of a deserving team.

Counter point: before the playoffs the egg bowl and iron bowl would have been meaningless. Not to mention Oregon and Texas tech games
More games matter now and that’s good

TCU didn’t belong in the national championship in 2023. That was with the playoffs. It happens. The playoffs destroyed college football.

Playoffs are great…..
Otherwise it is an AP vote

It’s not necessarily just a AP vote. The BCS was great. It screwed up one year, 2011, but other than that it was solid.

TCU beat a 12-0 Michigan to get to the championship. That's more deserving than ND.
quote:The portal and NIL did. I'm glad they are arguing who should be included as #12 compared to who should be included as #2, or, having a bunch of slob journalists choose the national champion without really seeing the games.

It screwed up one year, 2011,

I agree completely. It was as close to perfect solution as I think you could get while still maintaining the integrity of the other bowl games and making every regular season game count. Only thing I would have changed was adding a caveat that you had to have won your conference in order to be eligible for the championship game. What happened in 2011 should never had happened and honestly that is what fueled the fire of scrapping the BCD and going to playoff format.

Agreed. And Ryan Day would have been a pariah at OSU after the Michigan loss. Instead, with this system, he wins the championship.
