Even though OU won and the play is irrelevant...

What was the point in Mateer scoring on the very next play, after the RB downed it at the half inch line??

Robinson kneeling it at the 1, forced Tenner to call that Timeout. Mateer scoring after the timeout made a miracle Tenner comeback pretty much impossible.

The RB made a mistake by not running it in. Tennessee still had 2 timeouts so you can't run the clock out and you can't get a 1st down.

The RB overthunk it. They should have let him carry it on the next play however.

I know that based on pts but seemed like he could've take a knee twice... let the clock keep running, then punch it in for the score on 3rd.
But no matter, OU won.

So take a knee on first and second to force the TO calls.

Explain. This makes no sense. The RB not scoring and kneeling at the 1 forced Tenner to use one of those 2 TO's they had left. The go ahead score with Mateer after that put a comeback by Tennessee with less than 1 minute left impossible.

That's a fair point. My only beef is they didn't give it to Robinson and let him score. He ran it 30 something yards and did what the coaches told him, to kneel it. Give the kid his TD.

Agreed. Mateer could have changed whatever play was called and let Robinson score.

Yep, OU screwed it up, I was not happy about it during the game. Kneel it twice before going for the TD, and at worst, Vols have the ball with barely any time left on their own 1.
I think anyone paying attention to football the last decade or so knows you never give a good offense the ball with any time, even if you can go up two scores. Just not worth the risk.

1 or 2 timeouts doesn't matter that much. Tennessee was getting the ball back.
You're just describing what happened and saying it was on purpose. You weren't guaranteed to get a TD on the next play. If it was so easy, why didn't they kneel and take away the 2nd timeout as well?

Basically the RB didn't know what the optimal move was at that point, because the coaching staff didn't address it prior to the drive.
People ignore stuff like that in a win but little things like that and all the penalties, and I'm not sure Venables is the guy.

Venables is a terrible game manager. Agreed there.

I think Arbuckle calls the offense

Yeah but in Venables 4 years at OU as HC, game management has been an issue since year 1.

Yes, but it’s in BV’s interest to step in and let him know if he thinks they should take a different approach. A good HC does that.

I think staff told him to stop. Then after TN took a TO it gave them time to think. We were only up 2 points. If you kneel the time down you can’t run out the clock.
Then you have risk in a blocked FG and even a long return. They likely felt good that at worst TN scores and we get the onside.
It worked out. If anyone recalls last year TN at OU our QB was going in for a TD run and fumbled the ball. That cost us the points and momentum. That had to weigh on coaches thinking worst case with a blocked FG. Then all TN needs is their own FG to win game.
Something not mentioned but related. In 3rd QTR we got a TD and kicked the EP to go up 6. Some said we should have gone for 2. I said its too early to chase points.
Fast forward and that late TD we scored we were able to kick the EP to make it a 2 score game. If its a 1 score game up 8, then TN approaches their own FG drive differently and would be going for TD and 2PT to tie. That 3rd QTR EP was key to us being up 9 vs 8 or even 7.
I don’t know there is a perfect answer in that situation. It worked out but took some work. The play that pissed me off was the pass Int on first down when run was the only call you can make. Luckily our D held them on 4th down afterwards.

That was kinda dumb on OU's part. They shoulda kneeled it at least 1 more time, UT would have called their final timeout andt hen probably let them score anyway.
