Looks like we should be using the BCS to rank the top 12 for the playoffs.

Well, we do.
It just needs to be the human component in lieu of the biased and often very stupid AP and Coach's polls in that model. Similar to the Harris Poll in the old BCS.
The balance is what is missing.
Also, no guaranteed positions. Just the top 12. They play in the order they are ranked.

Exactly. It is for nothing other than to drive TV dollars with "top 25" matchups in September
