College Basketball is officially Broken

Read Tom Izzo’s rant against the NCAA this morning. He’s right.
Turns out the NCAA is granting eligibility to G League players to go to college. Izzo wasn’t happy that Louisville got a 3 year G League player, former 4 star. Says it’s bad for the sport. Joked he’s gonna bring back former players who have eligibility left from years ago if the NCAA doesn’t care.
So, we have to start recruiting G League players too? Good grief

I like how the NCAA is acting like a petty child and just letting everything go now.
“Oh you think we are too greedy and strict? Fine. Have at it. Do whatever you want, pay and play whoever you want.”
People hated on them but due to how quick this mess has spread, I can see why they were so staunch in their stances for years.

I don’t understand how we got to this murky area that G League and college are now both semi pros.
I don’t want A&M fielding a team of 20-28 year olds from the G League. Just bc they want NIL money.

Pretty much.
Everyone was SO CERTAIN that the only thing holding collegiate sports back was the NCAA... when it turns out at least some of their rules were in place for a reason.

How many years does Shaq have left?

So wait- college teams can freely recruit and pay G League players now?

Any contest that features 3-4 dozen penalties is not a game. It's broken already.

Yes, and Izzo said the NCAA didn’t formally tell coaches that’s legal now. Louisville and Santa Clara already signed G leaguers.

“They” being the mini army most players seem to employ/let hang on.

WTF? How did we not know about this sooner. That is completely absurd.
So why not be able to sign a one-and-done guy who didn't work out in the NBA? Seems like the same thing.

Not that this would ever happen, but does this mean if an active NBA player had college eligibility left he could technically go play in college?

Why stop at G-Leage players. Start recruiting all those 10-day NBA contractors who'll probably make more with NIL and are better than G-Leagers.

The story is developing.
quote:
"I am going to get myself in trouble, but I listen to people talk about how kids changed. Kids aren't the problem, we're the problem," Izzo told reporters Tuesday. "This was sprung on us again yesterday where a guy can be in the G League for two or three years and then all of a sudden, he's eligible. Most of my people knew nothing about it. ... I'm not real excited about the NCAA or whoever is making these decisions, without talking to us, just letting it go. They're afraid they're going to get sued."
On Monday, London Johnson -- a former four-star recruit who has averaged 7.6 points over three seasons in the G League -- announced his commitment to Louisville. Last month, another G League player, Thierry Darlan, announced his commitment to Santa Clara.
Both moves seem to defy the NCAA's previous amateurism and eligibility rules, which barred any players who had previously competed for money at a professional level from playing Division I basketball.
Per the NCAA's Division I manual, any athlete who has been compensated as a professional beyond "actual and necessary expenses" -- a category that includes health insurance, meals, lodging and transportation -- cannot play college basketball. But the NCAA has bent those rules recently for multiple international prospects who've participated in professional leagues overseas.
The murkiness presented by the name, image and likeness and revenue share eras have made the line between professional and amateur grayer than it has ever been.

I’m gonna talk to Sam Presti and see if he can send some G leaguers over to OU. Maybe have him send Chet down to G league and then over to OU for important games. 3-way contract
——
How is this even possible? If they went to NBA (G league too) then how can they go back? Granted, most NBA players never did more than 3 years but still. This makes no logical sense because a G leaguer isn’t in college.

It's professional sports now across the board in football and basketball. There are no rules, only money.

Rules have to be enforced to have meaning and we have a whole lot of judges in this country willing to undermine that enforcement if it means the rich get richer.

Most of these students don't care about an education any more either. When is the last time you heard of a player being academically ineligible ?

The popularity of athletes taking online classes only is kinda sad. They are cheating themselves out of a proper education, but hey, getting a million during your college years is a head start in life.

It was definitely better when mainly the blue bloods paid their players and let them take fake classes.
At least it was for the blue bloods
